Marker's refusal to drop his last case resulted in a savage beating which put him in Hospital. Prior to discharge, Frank is full of self pity and depression. He is visited by former landlady Helen Mortimer, who has feelings for Frank, which he is reluctent to reciprocate. She is not able to shake him out of his remorse, and after a fruitless visit to a job centre, he realises he is trapped into remaining an enquiry agent. A fine parallel is drawn betweeen Marker and a woman he visits on a case offered to him by friendly police officer Percy Firebank. She is being forced to leave her flat because the owner wants the property back, but has no where to go. Franks tries to offer help and advice, but how best to help unhappy people? That is a question Frank often is posed, but not one which he himself has an answer for in his own case. Marker's life is his work, and in taking on the problems of other people, he tends to himself in that way. Finally, Marker gets a visitor from Ron Gash, an ex-policeman turned prvate eye, who may have a job for him. An introspective, thought provoking episode.moreless
