  • On the eve of the 1965 Watts riots, Sam leaps into an working class, black medical student who is dating a white girl from the suburbs.

    9.0
Another great episode that brilliantly deals with an important social issue, without being too preachy. Set during the 1965 California Watt riots, their is plenty of anger, fear, hatred and frustration to go around.

It does not flinch from showing the real economic frustrations of many urban black men and women, who felt stuck in a cycle of poverty and racism.

Nor does the episode legitimize the use of violence to solve these problems. The black rioters are not turned into saints and the white police are not turned into simple minded villains.

The complexity of the social problems (i.e. racism, hatred and poverty) are superbly shown in a manner that is not only realistic and gritty, for network television, but also adds to (as opposed to takes the place of) the episode's leap.
