Episode Summary

EDIT

October 14, 1964: Since mainstreaming the mentally retarded is not yet a popular concept, Sam must help Jimmy LaMotta, the "slow" young man he's leaped into, get a job and gain his coworkers' acceptance, in order to prevent his brother from returning Jimmy to the institution where he previously lived.

This was a terrific episode ! It has everything a great episode needs: First of all I liked that there was the personal part about Al's sister. We don't usually get to hear a lot about Al's past(except his wives ;-) and I liked him to be that serious about Sam saving Jimmy. Second thing I really really liked is the way the connection between the two brothers is shown. It's not just shown that Frank is protecting Jimmy, but also that in doing so he makes him feel much more retarded than he is. He is so concerned about him all the time, that he just acts like he had to protect hime, even when he didn't do anything wrong.

Well the end was a little to obvious, but since the rest of the episode was so wonderful, i still think it's one of the best episodes of QuantumLeap.

Especially I liked the whole Sam-being-retarded-story. He didn't even acted disabled but things happend that just made him look like being it. It shows so much that if people treat you like a disabled it's much harder to be normal and that someone so-called normal is much likely to be as much disabled in a way.moreless

    • Al: We've been having some difficulty with Ziggy. He's going through mood swings. I think we need to get a girl computer, put it next to him. One with a nice set of hard disks.
      Sam: You would.

    • Samuels: I like your brother, but I don't think I can give you a job!
Sam: I'm slow, sir, not deaf.

    • Connie: I could defrost that big roast I have, but that could take awhile.
Sam: Just pop it in the microwave.
      Connie: What's a microwave?
      Sam: It's...
Corey: Like in the movie Invaders From Mars. You know, when they zap Earth with microwaves, and everybody gets cooked. Right, Uncle Jimmy?
      Sam: Right. Invaders From Mars.

    • Al: There was a girl named Trudy.
Sam: I don't have time for this.
Al: She was retarded, Sam! He I.Q. was lower than Jimmy's. And all the kids in the neighborhood, they used to tease her. Kids can be cruel. They'd call her names, like "dummy" and "monkey face." And I hated it. And I used to get in fights all the time over this. But that's what big brothers are for, right? My mother couldn't handle it. That's probably why she ran off with this stupid encyclopedia salesman. But my dad tried to keep us all together. He was a construction worker. He went from job to job, and then when it took him to the Middle East, I wound up in an orphanage, and she wound up in an institution. When I was old enough, I went back there for her. But it was too late. She was gone, Sam. Pneumonia, they said. How does a 16-year-old girl die from pneumonia in 1953, Sam?!? We're not gonna lose Jimmy. Right?
      Sam: Right.
      Al: Right.

    • Corey: Yeah, but most people are mean to you.
Sam: People... don't know me. I'm... different and-and that scares them.

    • Sam: Instead of reading this, why don't I tell you a story?
      Corey: About what?
Sam: About... a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. It was a time of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from the hidden base...

    • Sam: If you die, you're never gonna see Star Wars.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Corey: Like in the movie, Invaders From Mars.
Referencing the 1953 movie starring Helena Carter, Jimmy Hunt, and Leif Erickson. A young boy sees an alien spaceship land near his house, and the Martians soon start controlling the minds of all the adults in town.

    • Sam: About... a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. It was a time of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from the hidden base....
Referencing the opening crawl of the original (1977) Star Wars movie (now known as "Episode IV") nearly verbatim.
