  • An odd place in Season 5, yet with an easily missed revelation about the Beckett family.

Aside from the fact he's back home in Elk Ridge, Indiana, this is an odd episode for Season 5. I say this because Season 5 is well known for having the more sensationalized leaps, Elvis, Marilyn, the Trilogy, Lee Harvey Oswald, etc. So it is actually strange to have a "by the book" leap in the midst of more entertaining episodes. It's not a bad thing though, as it brings the series back to its roots of helping "average" people.

The most noteworthy part of this episode is a discussion Sam has with an old couple in the bank about the Beckett family. This episode takes place a while after Season 3's "The Leap Home" two-parter where Sam tries to save his brother Tom from dying in Vietnam. At the end of the second episode, he does indeed prevent his brother from dying on the date he originally did, but we are never told whether Tom survived the war altogether. In this episode, the old couple mention that the Beckett's son just returned from Vietnam. There's no groundswell of emotion or music to make this a poignant moment, but unless this was a mistake by the writers, it's essentially proof that Tom Beckett does make it home from the war alive.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • When Sam and Al are talking at the conclusion of the episode, there is an Elk Ridge police car in the foreground. The lightbar on the roof is a long rectangle and reaches from one side of the roof to the other. In 1971, this type of lightbar did not exist. The lights in use at that time where either a single or double roto-beam unit.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Sam: How could you do it? How could you steal all those peoples' land?
Vernon: What you call stealing, I call business.
Al: Oh, what a nozzle! I'd like to grab his Adam's Apple and pull it out his nose!

    • Al: (As Sam stares intently) Sam, I know that look.
      Sam: What look?
Al: What look? That look! The "I'm gonna save the world" look.

  • NOTES (1)

    • This leap finds Sam in his hometown of Elk Ridge, Indiana.

This marks the second time in the series where he leaps into the location, the first being Season Three's opening episode "The Leap Home", where Sam leaps into a 16-year-old version of himself.

In both episodes, Sam immediately considers himself "home" and considers failing his mission so he can stay in Elk Ridge and discontinue leaping.

Sam sees his father at the end of this episode (Scott Bakula reprises the role).

    • Al: Well, maybe next time you'll leap into Carl Lewis or something.
Carl Lewis is an African American track and field star who has won 10 Olympic medals (9 of which were gold), most in sprinting.
