When lying to Montgomery about his identity, Sam says he was injured in the battle of Bull Run. Sam is referring to The Second Battle of Bull Run, a major battle of the American Civil War, which was fought August 28 - August 30, 1862, one month prior to his leap-in.
Al: An officer, but definitely not a gentleman. This is a reference to An Officer and a Gentleman, a 1982 film starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger.

"Scarlett O'Hara" and "Rhett Butler" are the main characters in the film Gone with the Wind, the motion picture adaptation of the novel by Margaret Mitchell. It concerns the plot of Scarlett, who must fight to keep her land together in a war-torn south during the Civil War. She falls in love with Butler, a northern entrepreneur with a heart of gold.
