Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Sam puts on his shirt twice when the guy comes to visit him in his dressing room to offer him the job as the new Boxer Boy.

    • In the scene where Sam goes to the club with Jane and her son, the lava lamp on the table's shapes don't match from shot to shot.

    • Look closely, in the scene where Sam is looking at the greeting card. You can see the bar code on the back, even though they were never used in the 60's.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Al: You're lucky he didn't give you a flying noodle kick, you nozzle!

    • Jackson: Uh, you see, we're looking for the new Boxer Boy. You know, Boxer Boy Underwear? "Lasts a lifetime plus ten years?"
Al: Yeah, hey, I've still got a pair of those.

    • Al: That audience was riveted.
      Sam: Oh, please.
Al: It was like they were watching...a car wreck. Like it was horrible, but you were too fascinated to look away.

    • Neil: Tonight we'd like to take you someplace special. Your choice.
Liz: We want your fiftieth birthday to be one you won't forget.
      Penny: Oh, boy.
Sam: Mmm, you can say that again.

    • Sam: Jane, we deserve a chance.
Al: Action speaks louder than words, Sam.
Penny: What kind of a life...I mean, we're not kids...
      (Sam kisses her)
      Al: Atta boy.

  • NOTES (1)

    • When Sam tells Jane her singing is good, she says that people will think she sounds like Tiny Tim.

Tiny Tim was a singer in the late 60's who was known for his high-pitched, whiny singing.

    • Episode Title: The Play's The Thing
The title of the episode is a reference to a line from Hamlet (Act II, scene ii) by William Shakespeare.

Coincidentally (or perhaps purposefully), Sam must perform in Hamlet during the episode.
