    9.5
A touching episode dealing with the emotional impact that the death of a young man has on his mother, father and younger sister. Everyone deals with grief differently; the father refuses to deal with it and ignores his daughter. The mother blames herself and looks to a deceptive author, for comfort. We get a bit of real history, this episode takes places during the 1973-1974 Oil Crisis, and we learn that one of Al's ex-wives is Jewish.

Their is a nice scene at the end, where the family performs Matzevah (Unveiling of the tombstone). In the Jewish faith this typically takes places about a year after the person has died.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • There is a goof at the end of this episode, when Sam leaps into Jimmy LaMotta. On Sam's Bullwinkle t-shirt the moose's head in facing his right side. When the camera cuts back to Sam after looking at Jimmy in the mirror, the head faces Sam's left side. This isn't repeated in the full episode, 'Jimmy' (2-8).

    • Sam had to have said something, perhaps not a full blown 'sermon' because after the service some one calls his comments interesting or something to that effect.

    • It was fairly obvious in watching this episode that the 'sermon' was given by the actual Rabbi David Bosch, before Sam leaped in. That was in no way a goof because Sam had not leaped in until the END of the Bat Mitzvah.

    • Sam is clearly uncomfortable as a Rabbi, and knows nothing about the Jewish faith. Yet is able to give a good religious sermon [which we never hear] without Al? This episode also mentions the gas shortage brought about by OPEC.

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • During the charity fundraising event, Sam gives the Heimlich maneuver to a man who is choking. Someone then says, "Are you alright, Dr. Heimlich?" The real Dr. Heimlich first published his findings on the use of this maneuver in 1974.

    • Title: Thou Shalt Not...

Reference to the Ten Commandments, many of which begin with "Thou shalt not". The most likely commandment of reference for this episode is "Thou shalt not commit adultery".
