  • You Had A Christine Jorgensen!?

Sam leaps into a single lady, which makes things a tad bit awkward for him and Al. While facing sex discrimination and harassment in the work place, Sam must prevent his host's roommate from committing suicide.

Initially, Sam only leaped into men and this may have been a decision to avoid too much controversy in the first season. Yet, just as leaping into a black man in the 1950s, gave Sam first hand knowledge of segregation and racism, leaping into a woman forces Sam to personally experience sex discrimination and harassment in a large corporation.

This was one of the - many great things about the series. The old motto about "walking a mile in some elses shoes", became a reality for our time traveling hero.

Putting the male actor in women's clothing added another layer of social commentary to the episode, which the series (generally) ignored. While the show only dealt with gay rights once, gender became an amazingly fluid thing in this TV series.

The America that Sam leaped into in this episode, had few (if any) protections against sex discrimination and frequently operated under the assumption that men making unwelcomed sexual advances to women, was just, harmless fun; . "boys will be boys".moreless
  • As a woman...

How does Sam do "her" hair??
  • Sam becomes Samantha

This one is worth watching just to see the scumbucket boss get payback at the end. :-) Great episode that makes a statement about sexual harrassment and the problem of getting involved with someone who is married.
  • Goodbye Sam, hello Samantha!

A pivotal episode in Quantum Leap history as Sam becomes a woman. The episode could have been bogged down in that very detail for the entirity, but not this show! There's a great story about two girls trying to make it in a man's world. Alongside cracks about high heels, short skirts, make up and bras, we have sexual harrassment, extramarital affairs, attempted suicide and big business. A great episode.
  • Sam becomes Samantha to prevent his roommate from committing suicide. His (her) roommate's boyfriend is married and promises to leave his wife for her. As the plot develops, we learn that Buddy Wright, the boyfriend, has no intentions of leaving his wifemoreless

This episode marks the first instance where Sam Beckett inhabits the body of a woman. This situation creates a problem for Al because he is distracted by Samantha Stormer's attractiveness and Sam (Beckett) has a hard time getting Al to focus on the business at hand. Though the mission is to save Gloria's life, the primary story focuses on the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace in the early 60’s. With the workplace being the offices of an automobile manufacturer, there are some timely references to Studebaker and Edsel. Seeing Scott Bakula in low cut gowns with his manly chest and watching him try to apply lipstick are funny moments. Sam’s strategy to effectively scare off Buddy Wright from further advances is simply to tell Buddy the truth. He tells him: "I am a man, and I’ll prove it to you".moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • When Sam is trying to get Gloria off of the building ledge, Sam reaches out and helps Gloria around the building edge, but when the scene cuts back a little bit, Gloria has not yet made the turn around the edge of the building.

    • In the opening which gave a brief recap of the previous episode, we see Sam (as Charlie, from "The Americanization of Machiko") getting off the bus. The first shot is of Sam in the bus doorway, with a man behind him; the camera angle changes and Sam is walking along the side of the bus and Machiko is getting off the bus, followed by an older woman wearing a hat. There is no one between Sam and Machiko.

However, in "The Americanization of Machiko", when Sam got off the bus, we never saw Machiko. Sam was followed by the man who was behind him in the doorway, then a young woman carrying a hat box, a man with a package, a man in a blue shirt, and a blonde woman. We didn't see Machiko until Sam got into the truck with his father.

    • Joy Stockwell, who plays Miss Bramford, is Dean Stockwell's wife. This is listed as her only acting appearance.

    • The leap-in teaser for "What Price Gloria?" was originally attached to the end of the first season ender "Play it Again Seymore". The producers chose to instead use "Honeymoon Express" as the second season premiere instead of this episode.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Buddy: Samantha, I understand playing 'hard-to-get' in the steno pool, but you've got the job now. I overlooked some very eligible gals to, uh, give it to you.
      Sam: This is sexual harassment!
Buddy (looking puzzled): I don't know what that is, but I like the sound of it! Why don't you just explain that to me tonight over drinks?

    • Al: You can lower it.
      Sam: I'm a woman!
      Al: And I'm in love!

    • Sam: [voice over as he dresses] I've come to the conclusion that women are masochists. Its like someone designed a torture rack you can wear, from the bra to stockings to tight skirts to the shoes from hell. Everyday they perform this weird binding ritual and for what?

    • Gloria: Sam?....Sam are you ready?
Sam: [mumbling to himself] Wow...This leap I'm going to be called by my own name!

    • Al: If you weren't my best friend I'd…

    • Gloria: Oh That time of the month huh?
      Sam: Uh...no I don't think so.

    • Sam: Don't even start unless you want to eat your teeth for lunch.

  • NOTES (2)

    • Al has severe problems dealing with Sam leaping into a woman in this episode. He finds it difficult to look at the beauty of Samantha and see his friend Sam. He spends much of his time during the episode speaking to Dr. Beeks.

    • This episode is the first in which Sam leaps into a woman.
