Gay or Straight? That's the Question
AIRED:

The Center has hired top fund-raiser, Jeffrey Pendergrass, to help them raise money for the 2004 Liberty Ride. The proceeds will benefit Liberty House Hospice, which is currently in danger of shutting down. After seeing money being spent frivolously at the lavish kick-off party, Brian grows skeptical of Pendergass' motives. Realizing Pendergass seems to be the only one benefiting from the proceeds, Brian does some investigative work. When Brian reveals to Pendergass that he's discovered his questionable history with other fund-raising organizations, the top fund-raiser leaves town-claiming the money raised thus far in Pittsburgh will cover his expenses--barely, leaving nothing for the hospice.

Hunter has repeatedly missed his curfew leading Michael and Ben to wonder if he's hustling again. When they confront him, he tells them he's been studying with a friend. They continue to press him, and he finally admits the truth that he's been seeing someone. Michael and Ben are thrilled and tell him that they want to meet this person.

Emmett and Drew have been meeting regularly at a motel for steamy encounters. Drew insists no one can ever find out about their relationship, but the rules are broken when Emmett unintentionally runs into Drew at an Iron Men's game. Assuming it's the end of the affair, Emmett is crushed and in his misery, he tells Ted about the affair and admits he was falling in love with him.

After their one night together, Auerbach wants to see Lindsay again. She tries to avoid him but is finally forced to explain that what happened was a mistake. Later, he comes to the house on his way to the airport and asks her to go with him. Lindsay declines claiming that even if a tiny part of her wanted something else, she'd still choose to stay with Melanie and their children. He gives her a kiss on the cheek and leaves. Melanie witnesses the touching goodbye and realizes that something more than a friendship developed between them.

A sweet episode that pertains to sexuality in regard to several of the scenarios presented. Hunter has a special friend, Lindsay struggles to choose, Debbie tries to win Carl back, and Emmett falls out with Drew. This is an episode that is worth discussing and I'm waiting for the opportunity to do so.
  • A sweet yet sad episode.

    7.5
I'll start with the sad. It was sad because of 2 things. The first being Melanie finding about Lindsay's affair. Although you gotta wonder if Mel should forgive Lindsay pretty fast (I haven't watched the next episode yet) due to the fact that she did cheat earlier in the series. Even though most of the time they don't really appeal to me, I still find the end of a relationship breaks my heart. And this one did that. The second sad thing is Drew standing Emmett up. I think he should've at least gone to Emmett and talked to him about what happened, but then I guess that would mean he'd actually have to admit that he had feelings for Em he's not ready to accept and even admit to himself.

Now the sweet....Horvath going to Debbie and them possibly getting back together. I'm happy for her. Hunter being afraid to tell Ben and Michael that he's straight. And then Michael being all worried that Hunter needs straight parents. I loved it. And Brian showing his heart by sorta saving the Liberty Ride from a swindler. I think that's all. It was just an episode that touched my heart throughout the whole thing. It was nice to see these sides of some of the characters.moreless
  • Mel finds out about Linze and Sam. Emmett tells Ted about Drew. Debbie tries to win back Carl's attention. Ben and Mike find out Hunter is dating a girl. Jeff Pendergrass comes to town to raise money for hospice with the Liberty ride.moreless

    10
This man named Jeff Pendergrass is known all over for raising all kinds of money for charities and hospices. With the help of Ben, Mel and everyone, Jeff is organizing the Liberty ride. When he gives Brian a proposition of wanting Brian's clients to sponser this event, Brian asks why his clients should give their money to him. Jeff then basically threatens to tell people that Brian and his clients are homophobic. If Jeffrey has raised money by extortion, he's not the kind of man i'd want helping me. Brian later goes to his room agreeing to sleep with him and to help him, but let's him know that he has don't some checking around. It seems Jeff lives very well for a charity worker, and some of the charities he's raised money for have seen less than half of what was raised. We later find out that Jeff took off and left town, with all the donations from the hospice they were trying to raise money for. I can see Brian footing the bill himself to fix things, but i really hope he hunts this guy down and gives him what he deserves. On the other hand Linze ran into Sam and he asked why she hasn't returned is calls. He wants to see her again and she says no, that it was a mistake, and that she was confused. Later, Sam stops by the house to say goodbye to Linze, and to ask her to go with him. She says no, but little does she know, Mel was watching through the window. Mel talked to Linze later and let it be known that she knew something. When Linze confirms it, Mel is hurt and says you don't live with someone for nine years and not know. She tells Linze that she doesn't want to hear any of her explanations. Linze says what's important is that it confirmed that this was who she was and that she still chooses Mel. Mel says "i'm not so sure that i still choose you." and leaves. Yes Mel did her cheating, but she still has a right to be upset and angry as well. So was this just a one time thing or does Linze like guys in a small way sometimes? Or was she just searching for an answer? Emmett goes to one of Drew's games and Drew's soon to be wife brings them to the locker room to meet him. Knowing he broke the rules Emmett is upset. After spending a night alone he figures that Drew is done with him. He is upset and lets the cat out of the bag to Ted, and says that he was falling in love with Drew. Drew had done the photo shoot with Brian's office, but only after everyone else was made to stand around in their underwear as well. I thought this was funny to see Brian, and even the women in the office standing there in their underwear. Debbie had brought Carl to the football game too, and all Carl can talk about is them being just friends, and you can see how it hurts Deb. Later, he shows at her house with a melon. He keeps saying friends this, friendly that, then he kisses her. She says something and he kisses her again, this time like a lover. Are these two finally going to get back together? Ben and Mike find out that Hunter is dating a girl. He hasn't gone far with her yet because he is afraid about is HIV. Mike is acting like a parent who found out their kid is gay but saying things like "do you think its a phase?" They eventually decide that Hunter is going to have to seek advice about girlfriends elsewhere, since they do not have as much experience in that department. Mike was confused because he assumed Hunter was gay since he only hustled men. However, Ben said his mother had started him on that, and it was always for money so that might be the difference. Another great addition to the show, i can't wait to see the next one as usual. It always keeps me wanting more.moreless
  • Mel and Linds' relationship is on the rocks.

    8.7
Melanie watches from the window as Sam says goodbye to Lindsay before moving. She suspects that they are more than just friends at this point. After finding out that something was going on between them, Mel is enraged and possibly wants to break up. Lindsay pleads that she still chooses to be with her, which in return recieves that Mel no longer chooses to be with her. Hunter is seeing someone, but it isn't someone who neither Ben nor Michael would expect; it's a girl. Worried about their lack of knowledge for straight relationships, Michael wonders if he'd be better off with straight parents. Brian helps out the AIDs hospice by raising money, and also spotting a con-artist a mile away, that was hired to organize the Liberty Ride. Now with loads of money in debt, the organization doesn't know how to pay for the ride, nor keep the hospice open.moreless
  • Surprises all around

    7.9
Well, well, well. Seems we have a lot of surprises popping up left and right. Brian not only helps out the Liberty House Hospice greatly but does his best to disassociate them from a very shifty con-artist. Normally, this isn't exactly his forte but at the same time, as Debbie likes to say, Brian's biggest organ is his heart and he is an excellent judge of character to boot so it would make sense that he would suspicious of this con-artist from minute one. However, his heroism doesn't save the Liberty Ride. With the funds gone the event is in severe danger of being shut down.

Hunter, the littelest hustler, has a secret of his own. And it's not what one would expect. He is a little less gay then one would have thought, in fact he's not gay at all. In fact he's even been seeing someone, she's a really nice girl. However, this is a little hard for Michael and Ben to process simply because Michael puts forth the notion that maybe he would be better of with straight parents considering neither one of them knows the first thing about women.

Melanie finds out Lindsey's dirty little secret and it is quite obvious, if it wasn't already, that they are headed down the path to splits-ville.moreless
