Episode Summary

Quest for the Sea Series Episode 1 and 2 is the new "living history" series from PBS about two modern families who experience life as it was lived in a 1937 rural Newfoundland outport fishing community. Two families, the Wheelers and the Murrays, as well as two outsiders that will be living with each of households, spend two eye-opening months fishing for cod and preparing authentic meals with only the bare necessities. The women find out that cooking takes an entire day, and the men leave to fish at dawn and don't arrive home until dusk. Experience the remarkable ups and downs of life in Hay Cove, New Foundland. In "Quest for the Sea Episode 1: A Village Called Hay Cove" the ten new residents arrive, full of adventure and hope, and begin to settle into two households, facing the rigours of life in 1937. In "Quest for the Sea Episode 2: King Cod" everyone struggles with fatigue and exhaustion. Tensions rise as personalities clash among the group as time runs out for the outport to meet its fishing quota. The community has gone into debt with a local merchant in order to receive their much-needed summer supplies. The stress of this crushing debt causes tensions to appear in the community and then injury strikes.moreless
