This episode was in fact a pilot episode for a spinoff show to be called The Cutting Edge which would have starred Barry Newman, who would play "the head of a hospital with a staff made up of the finest equipment to handle the kind of cases that others have considered hopeless."
This may explain the lack of many of the supporting cast and the relativley small amount of screen time for Jack Klugman. Anita Gillette was also to be in the series.
