Raising Hope

Season 3 Episode 5

Don't Ask, Don't Tell Me What To Do

Aired Friday 9:30 PM Oct 30, 2012 on FOX

  • Trivia

    • The episode depicts Halloween 2012 as being on a Thursday, but Halloween this year was actually on a Wednesday.

    • Elijah and Jordan wear Pitcher and Catcher baseball uniforms to show the relationship roles.

    • Sabrina's gay friends are named Jordan and Elijah, names obviously borrowed from the show's producers and occasional writers Jordan Young and Elijah Aron.

  • Quotes

    • Jimmy: And the only person I want to donate sperm to is you. (Sabrina makes a weird face) That didn't sound as romantic out loud as it did in my head.
Sabrina: Mm-mm. I guess we should probably go tell Jordan and Elijah.
Jimmy: I can't believe I have to deny people my sperm. I mean, there was a time I couldn't give this stuff away.

    • Sabrina: A barista? I'm losing out to a barista?
Elijah: Aren't you a cashier at a grocery store?
Sabrina: Yeah. But I do that ironically.

    • Virginia: (seeing Burt dance) You look like you're trying to shake a lizard off your back.

    • Jimmy: (going through a series of revelations while hanging out with gay guys at the bar) That's amazing. So, "glory hole" has nothing to do with a donut. Oh, I get it. (cut to another scene) Is it true you guys wax the fellas? (cut) I have a lot of dreams about dolphins. Does that mean anything? (cut) So, if you bite me, there's absolutely no chance I'll turn gay? Oh, maybe I did just make that up in my head. (cut) Oh, I get it! A bear's a guy. Ah, that makes way more sense. Well, you know, it's not nearly as impressive. (cut) Well, of course, I mean, who wouldn't want a shower made out of gold?

    • Burt: (about going to a gay bar with Jimmy) I have always wanted to know what goes on in those places. Who buys the drinks? Do they have a women's bathroom or just twice as many urinals? If you say to the bartender "I'm in the mood for some nuts" what do you get? When you think about it, I'm super gay-curious.

    • Jimmy: Do you know anything about gay people?
Burt: I think sometimes they like to wear handkerchiefs.

    • Burt: I don't care what those guys running for president say, this is the best country in the world.

  • Notes

    • Cloris Leachman is credited but doesn't appear.

    • "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor plays while Jordan and Elijah take care of Hope. Going with the theme of the episode, the song is frequently thought of as a gay anthem.

    • Original International Air Dates:
Canada: October 30, 2012 on Citytv
Czech Republic: March 5, 2013 on HBO

  • Allusions

    • Burt: When I'd watch Will & Grace, I'd fall asleep. Till that lady with the squeaky voice came on.

Burt is referring to Karen Walker, one of the four main characters of the show. Played by Megan Mullally, Karen is a rich socialite with a very high pitched voice which became the character's trademark, but it wasn't Mullally's real voice.

    • The episode title is a play on the official United States policy on homosexuals serving in the military which was established in December 21, 1993 and discontinued on September 20, 2011. Don't ask, don't tell (or DADT) prohibited military personnel to discriminate against closeted homosexual and bisexual service members.
