RAN: Remote Area Nurse

Show Summary

An Australian series/mini-series filmed on location on Masig Island in the Torres Strait in Queensland, Australia. Helen Tremaine (played by Susie Porter) has returned to the island of the Torres Strait where she had previously worked alongside the people of the local villages as a Remote Area Nurse (RAN). Helen is a strong woman with a strong distaste for authority. Although she fearlessly takes on local politics and everyday troubles that arise in the community, Helen struggles to fit in. She seems to be in never-ending conflict with locals who do not want their culture changed. They want to keep their island as it is but also know they need help from outsiders, like Helen, to support their people and protect them from dangers such as Dengue Fever.

  • Possibly the best Australian drama ever made

This show is one of the best i have ever seen in Australia or internationally, perfectly filmed in a beautiful location in the torres strait . This show featured mainly the local population and very few proffesional actors, the non proffesional actors however out shined the proffesional actors in every way, making for such a beautiful , that still managed to feature real and current issues to the indegionus and torres strait communtiy it's a show that truly makes you think and feel , by the end of the series i can guarenty that your likely to be emotionally atached to all the characters.moreless
  • A beautiful drama that explores the lives of indigenous people in remote communities, the issues they face and the struggle by outsiders to lend a hand.

A fantastic drama that follows the character of Helen, (Susie Porter) who returns to the beautiful islands of the Torres Strait as a RAN (remote area nurse). A beautiful and informative drama that explores the difficulties of providing medical assistance for a remote island community and one woman's efforts to belong in a community that wants her gone. Helen's life off the island is not so happy so she strives for acceptance within the island community. The show also explores local politics, love affairs, alcoholism, gambling, domestic violence and health issues like Dengue Fever. All beautifully shot on location in the Torres Strait, Queensland. Another example of Australian drama at its best!moreless
