Ray Donovan returned in a season premiere that felt all too familiar while trying to establish new ground for the main characters. Let's jump in and explore what worked and didn't.

As far as main characters go in Season 1 Ray himself was more of a blank-slate than anything else surrounded by infinitely more interesting than he. Now we get to see a little more behind the curtain after he thought he was done with Mickey he was all too wrong. The show definitely stretches the realms of believability when the second in line to take over as chief of the FBI takes an interest in Ray after the ballistics report on Sully Sullivan's murder doesn't match the story of the agent Ray has in his pocket. All too laughable was Ray storming into his office and telling him to lay off. While it is good for the story to have Agent Cochran pose a threat to Ray's family by having local cops pull over and almost arrest his daughter to bring Mickey back for them the fact that he doesn't want to use FBI resources to simply extradite Mickey (Ray isn't the only one with access to phone records) from Mexico where he is laying low. Ray has to protect his most troublesome client Diante who is found cheating on his wife by his wife and she shoots the girl in the arm with a gun. Ray grabs the gun from her and alleviates the situation by taking her to a park and firing two more rounds around her to sell the story of a mugging causing her gunshot wound. Lena arrives to help sell the story, threatening the girl if she doesn't corroborate Ray's version of events. Connor gets in trouble for pushing some tool down a flight of stairs and breaking the kid's collar bone which opens the Donovan's up to a potential lawsuit. Ray even goes to couples therapy (of course which is cut short) and seeing him try to make his marriage work and taking an active part in his kids' lives is a good change from the distant animal of Season 1, especially that he promises no more violence in front of the children. Even Ezra gets a visit from Cochran and pressures Ray to brink Mickey back so that they can't interfere with the construction of the Ruth Goldstein Cancer Institute that he so desperately wants to build as a tribute for his wife. Ray's assertion to Terry (who is now stalking Frances after having broken up over covering up killing the Father who molested Bunchy last season and Terry's refusal to go to the cops) that he is under more pressure than ever sure rings true from what I can see. With Ray getting pulled in all directions in professional and work life will bury him (as the greatly staged tableaux at the beginning of the episode showed us. I was hoping for there to be more than two weeks since the end of last season which puts Avi out of commission for some time. It's great to see him and Lena hanging out watching the singer in the wheelchair that Ray helped earlier in the day and has a great set of pipes. There's some weak stuff also about Bridget's boyfriend Washington having a youtube hit video now.

Mickey seems to be living it up in Mexico and even sees a talking dolphin (exemplifying that guilt that he may be in love with the woman he slept with last season who "isn't his type" as per his own admission) and almost swimming out too far. I was hoping we'd seen the last of Mickey last year as he and Ray parted on somewhat ambivalent terms after their season long arc last year so maybe he would've popped up later in the show's run (because hallucinating dolphins is certainly not the best way to start off a new year of any cable drama in my opinion). Mickey even shows to still be a scumbag when he gets Daryl down to come visit him and rigs a fight against him with a guy that looks a lot like a more muscular Latino Herc from the Wire who pummels Daryl into submission. Mickey of course, being such a class act, bet against his own son and wins a jackpot. My curiosity is that if the odds were against Daryl why did Mick have such a huge payout if La Fuerza was such a sure win? It's small I know but it's worth asking. Distraught Daryl calls Ray to tell him where Mickey is. Ray goes down to Mexico to retrieve Mickey to deliver him up to Cochran. When Mickey refuses to go with him Ray goes outside, takes off his shirt (having already gotten blood on another one) and goes into the bar with a baseball bat after Mick insists that he is no "shipmate, but the You hear cracking sounds and I'm sure Ray will have Mickey in his trunk at the beginning of next week.

Overall, great premiere that gives more of what fans of Ray Donovan like: a new direction, more of the title character smoldering but changing into more of an active parent and husband, updates on the always interesting Terry and Bunchy (go bike shop interview!) and Daryl. While the show can veer into the ridiculous factor (FBI and talking dolphins anyone?) at times it remains a solid character study of the underbelly of LA's glam life.

    Notes/Questions:

    1. Is it me or did Ray's sex with his wife seem rapey? I mean he didn't even ask he just did it! That's just wrong.

    2. Who is the woman with Avi? She's too young to be his grandmother who he mentioned last season so is it his partner? They should elaborate because they have never introduced her before now.

    3. Baseball bat seems to be a recurring theme in conversations Ray starts in the beginning of each year, is that a lazy attempt at a motif?moreless

glad to see Ray Donovan back. Season 2 started off with Ray dreaming of being buried alive and then Ray being buried in fixing everyone's problems and in a quandary on fixing his own. Mickey was down in Mexico having a good time and hallucinating that the ghost of Linda was haunting him.

Darryl learned what Ray warned him about, that Mickey uses everyone. Bunchy has finally decided to grow up and Ray is still haunted by his past. Can't wait to see where it all goes from here.moreless
