Journalist Jennifer Adams presents a new comedic show poking fun at Australian current affairs programs. Created by comedians Hamish Blake, Andy Lee, Ryan Shelton and Tim Bartley, Real Stories is, as its creators call it, the fifth best current affairs show on television. • Doco meets sketch in this half hour comedy program from Radio Karate.

I'm slightly hesitant about my review of this show, because in all honesty not enough commercial television opportunities are given to newer talent. However that's not reason enough to lie about my reaction to this show. However, firstly please excuse me for one moment as I run through some of the back story to this team of performers. First of all, many people don't realise that before Hamish and Andy on Channel 7, and before the Hamish and Andy show on radio, these lads and a few of their mates had a very funny show on Channel 31. It had stand-up, sketch and an interview and although some of the ideas were slightly old (ie. a guy walks into a chemist to buy a packet of condoms), overall it had a great energy and fun nature about it that you just laughed along anyway. For anyone familiar with Channel 31 it was up there with the stuff Darren and Brose did. Then the lads got their show up on Channel 7 which was nowhere near as good as their fun little Channel 31 show (The suits and the slick camera work didn't add to the charm). I then heard there was a pilot at Channel 7 which went nowhere, and when everything seemed over for the guys their radio show took off and Hamish did some great guest spots on Spicks and Specks. Shortly after that they did a deal with Rove's company and then Real Stories made it to our screens. I'm not sure if they're too busy now and slightly overexposed but not only was Real Stories a blatant rip off of a UK show and Chris Lilley's brilliant We Can Be Heroes, but the lads seemed to run out of ideas very quickly and although some of the first few jokes of each sketch were funny, every sketch dragged on for too long. Hamish Blake seems to be able to bring out humour from mediocre scripts but some of the other performers were very inconsistent. The team have been very fortunate to get so many opportunites which is good because they have talent, but I think they need to concentrate just on one thing like Martin & Molloy did years ago on radio. Don't let it get to your heads guys, learn from your failures and don't spread yourselves too thin.moreless
  • Current Affairs show parody where the stories are actually documentary style sketches. Hosted by former TV news presenter Jennifer Adams and written and performed by former Channel 31 comedy team Radio Karate.moreless

Congratulations to Network 10 Australia for investing in up and coming talent. As proven by the UK produced 'The Day Today', this kind of format can work well, however in this instance although there were some incredibly funny comic ideas and impressive list of guest cameos, most of the sketches ran too long and there were inconsistencies in ability across the cast. Hamish Blake continues to prove that he is the real deal, but I'd prefer to see this team being themselves, not playing characters, as proven by the success of the Hamish & Andy radio show.moreless
  • Real Stories is definitely first world class aussie series to be made in a long time. Absolutely un-missable!

Real Stories would have to be one of the best shows to come on television this year, an originial and extremely funny show. I was worried about this show, i had my doubts whether it would live up to the expectations: (after the Wedge had appeared on our screens and certainly hadn't). The show did however live up to it's expectations and surpass them with clever sketches that are funny because they seem so serious and then they start reporting on stupid things like "underground choirs". The host (Jennifer Adams) keeps a straight face and says rude and unusual things for a current affairs host to say and the show just works. 10 out of 10, I look forward to a season 2.moreless
  • What a brilliant new comedy! It's hilarious!

This new show Real Stories is absolutely fantastic. When I first saw the previews for it I thought that it would be another crappy sketch show but when I watched the first few episodes I wad addicted. I love it how they take everyday life things which we worry about and totally change it around. I nearly fall off the seat laughing it is so hilarious. If there is a downfall it is that there should be at least another two guys doing the sketches rather than the 3-4 there currently are. I hope this show lasts for a long time!moreless
  • Real Stories is a very good show it's about 3 main people who star in it as different people. A comedy about shows that are apparently real that they make fun of and do skits about it.moreless

I love this show! My two favourite radio show hosts are on this show. Andy recently got 'Cleo's bachelor of the year 2006' my favourite real story so far was on last week the 5..... minutes of silence that kept me cracking up I can't remember the numbers but its 1minute of talking a year but now because of that Jake Kovco guy its now only 1 minute a leap year! Definitely will be my favourite show for ages until it goes off air and I'm hoping that there will be a second series and third and so on. I encourage everyone to try this show because I reckon you'll like it and would want to watch it again! Especially listeners of there radio show. There are a few of the extras that have a talking role I've recognised like Rove McManus and Alan Brough (team captain from spicks and specks, Hamish and Andy sometimes appear on spicks and specks)moreless
