With Cheyenne, Van, and the baby living in student housing, things are finally back to normal and Reba plans to focus more attention on Kyra, who has become distant. However, her plans suddenly fall short when Van injures himself, suspending his scholarship and losing his off-campus housing, forcing the Montgomery family back into Reba's home.

Van's first real character development.

On the eve of moving into his new campus apartment with Cheyenne, Van injures his knee while helping with some final household chores for Reba. From this simple storyline come two major character developing moments for Van. After the injury, a new couple is seen moving into the apartment. Reba and Brock believe the athletic director has stripped the apartment from them because of Van's injury.

Van gets his opportunities to grow when he's confronted about the apartment. He explains that he chose to suspend his scholarship, without consulting with his wife first. Reba gives Van some tough love by explaining important decisions need to be made together. It's a very nice moment, one that makes it clear that Van respects what his mother-in-law has to say. He's willing to absorb and learn from what she says in order to strengthen his marriage. His concern for the family makes Van so likable. As the episode concludes, Van shares a secret with Reba: when the doctor said he couldn't play football, he was relieved. This is probably one of my favorite moments in the show so far. An athlete dealing with the ascension to the rigorous collegiate level is a very real and serious issue. It was a pleasant surprise to see it fleshed out in this episode. It was nice to see Van not obsessed with football.moreless

Just as Van and Cheyenne are preparing to move out, to live in an atletic dorm, Van decides to help with jobs around the house. While putting up the Christmas lights on the roof, he falls, and breaks his leg. Cheyenne worries that he won't be able to play football. The doctor assures her that he'll be fine. When Cheyenne, Brock, and Reba are moving things into their apartment, they find another couple unpacking their things. Reba thinks that they gave away Van and Cheyenne's apartment because of Van's injury. When the head of the dorms come in, they ask why they gave away their apartment, only to find that Van quit football for the year, and gave the apartment away himself.moreless
