Episode Summary

EDIT
Rimmer, Lister, Cat, Kryten and Kochanski have been sentenced to two years in 'The Tank' on secretive Floor 13, for stealing a Blue Midget and abusing confidential information during their trial in virtual reality. Lister signs up the gang for the 'Canaries', thinking it is the prison choir and enticed by the list of privileges that go with it. Lister is unaware the 'Canaries' is actually a convict army utilised for reconnaissance on uncharted planets. Their first assignment is to investigate an abandoned spaceship on an ocean planet, where they discover Cassandra, a computer that can predict the future. But it spells bad news for Rimmer, when Cassandra (Geraldine McEwan) predicts that he is going to die.moreless

  • The crew ends up in contact with a super computer that predict the future 100%, when it predicts Rimmer's death, at first he goes to great lengths to avoid but then when he discovers the manner he dies he goes to great lengths to welcome it.moreless

    9.4
The episode, self-admittedly, is borrowing from material that he has already touched upon, pre-determinism. They touched upon this topic very early in the show’s history back in “Future Echoes” the second episode ever made, really the first episode when you get past the pilot which was really just a builder episode. Perhaps their thinking was that not many people have seen that episode and they were writing to a completely different audience yet we can tell that they are running out of new and fresh ideas to do with this unique genre of sci-fi comedy. It’s a strong episode by itself and I rated it highly but you can almost smell the end of the series with this episode, how many more quirky sci-fi themed predicaments could the writers think of, I personally think their must be more, but in the end there wasn’t many, was there?moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Knot collapses from his heart attack in Cassandra's room, but in all subsequent returns to the room, there is no sign of his body.

    • It may seem a little odd that Rimmer would be calling Kochanski attractive when in Balance of Power he made it obvious that he hated her, with comments like "Snooty cow" and "She had a chip off her shoulders" not to mention when he throws her purse in Lister's flashback. One presumes that she turned him down or otherwise indicated disinterest.Response: At the time, Lister wanted to shut Rimmer down to activate Kochanski's hologram. Rimmer's "cow" remarks were more of a tantrum than a genuine opinion.

    • Cassandra says that all the canaries will be dead in 1 hour, with the exception of 'Rimmer', and Kryten, Lister, Cat and Kochanski. However, Kill Crazy was still knocked out in the transport vehicle and presumably would have survived too. Response: Kill Crazy was not her ship at the time, having been dragged onto the shuttle. Also, Cassandra is known to lie.

  • QUOTES (10)

    • Kris: It's coming true, its all coming true!
Rimmer: It's coming true, its all coming true!

    • Kochanski: It doesn't make sense. Why would I want to sleep with you?
Rimmer: Maybe you get blind drunk.
Kochanski: That doesn't excuse my other four senses!

    • Cassandra: All the Canaries will be dead within one hour...except for Rimmer...
Rimmer: Yes! (punches the air with relief)
Cassandra: ...who will be dead in twenty minutes.

    • Rimmer: So, you're saying the future's the future and, like your underpants, the chances of change are remote?

    • Kryten: According to Cassandra, our future is decided and we four survive, therefore, while we are here, we cannot die. Regard:
(Kryten pulls out his gun and pulls the trigger pointed at himself, Lister, Kochanski and Cat without it going off. He then points it at Rimmer)
      Kryten: Duck, Sir...!
(Rimmer ducks and Kryten shoots, the bullet rebounds off the walls many times before it comes back)
      Kryten: Duck again Sir!
(Rimmer ducks again as the bullet sails past)
      Kryten: Just as I thought
Cat: So, in other words, If I...
(Cat smacks Lister over the back of the head with the handle of a nearby fire axe)
Lister: AH! What was that for?
      Cat: You can't die!
Lister: Yeah but I can still feel pain you smegger!
      Cat: Oh, yeah...

    • Rimmer: How come you've never heard of the Canaries? They've got recruitment posters all over the men's bogs! How come you've not seen them?
Lister: When I'm in the men's toilets in prison, Rimmer, I tend not to look around, if y'know what I'm saying? It's like playing golf: I concentrate on my grip, keep my eye on the ball and try not to veer off to the side!
Rimmer: "The Canaries"... You know what they say it's supposed to stand for? "Convict Army Nearly All Retarded In-bred Evil Sheep shaggers"! They haven't got an X chromosome to share between them!

    • Kochanski: This is the first time I've ever been seduced by predeterminism theory.

    • Cassandra: You tried to cheat the future and failed, as I knew you would.
Rimmer: So what happens now? How... How do I die?
Cassandra: Lister catches you making love to Kochanski and shoots you through the head with a harpoon gun.
Rimmer: shocked Can you just double-check that?
Cassandra: I've seen it, it's what happens. In the old laundry room.
Rimmer: So let me just repeat what I think you're saying... Arnold, that's *me*, and Kochanski, that's *the woman* - the really attractive one you saw earlier; me and her were in bed, giving it rizz, when Lister, that's the short, dumpy one with the stupid haircut, walks in and shoots me through the head while I'm making love with Kochanski?
Cassandra: That is what is going to happen.
      Rimmer: Fantastic!!

    • Rimmer: What's that! pointing fearfully out of shot
      Kryten: What? Where?
Rimmer: It's moving, shaking from side to side like a leaf!
Kryten: I think that's your shadow, sir.

    • Rimmer: We, um, should be making tracks.
Cassandra: I'm afraid that that's not going to happen. The bulkhead's just given away and we're shipping water at a thousand gallons a second. All the Canaries will be dead within one hour, except for Rimmer...
      Rimmer: Yes!
Cassandra: ...Who will be dead in 20 minutes.

  • NOTES (1)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Name: Cassandra

Cassandra is the name of a mortal woman in Greek mythology who was given the power of prophecy by Apollo, who wanted to win her affections. Since Cassandra did not see Apollo as a lover, he corrupted her gift so that no-one would ever believe what she prophesised. Much like in this episode, Cassandra foresaw her own death, but could not prevent it. Cassandra was placed in the sky as the constellation Casseopia, "The Lady in the Rocking Chair".
