Episode Summary

Kryten gets fussy and jealous thinking that Lister likes Kochanski better than him. When the primary power goes off and they get stuck in a room, they have no choice but to climb into the small ventilation ducts which wind round Starbug in order to escape. Whilst inside the ducts they discover a lot about each other, including the fact Lister is claustrophobic.moreless

  • Kochanski gets to know the crew

This episode doesnt have the usually high gag quality I would associate with the show. Mostly because this is the first episode w/o Rimmer a big source for the jokes and skretches.

However, unlike most fans I actually though Kochanski's character worked quite well in the new dynamic. This episode carrys on where Kryton and Kochanski's characters are still at loggerheads because of Krytons fear that she will take Lister away from him. Futhermore, the episode theme is to take the piss out of SF shows where crews have to perform the oh so pointless crawl through the ships crawlspaces to achieve some life or death task.

The main theme of the show is basically a Rite of Passage for Kochanski during the middle act, which is a pointless excericse where she gets to know the crew and her character is expanded upon. Several scenes with her as the primary actor are used to flush out what she is feeling, which as you might expect isnt great at being marooned with this crew.

While Lister's claustrophobia doesnt really spark anything other than an interesting story about Kochanski - and a squeeky gate, which I wont spoil for you here.

Not as funny as previous epiosdes, nothing of consequence happens, but if you want to catch every detail about Kochanski then tune in - otherwise you wont miss much.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (7)

    • The Cat: It's so damn hot, I can barely breathe. Satan could come here for his winter break!

    • Kryten: What would you say to a glass of drinking chocolate?
Kochanski: I'd say "Glass of drinking chocolate, get me out of here!"

    • Kryten: What about the way you look at him?
      Kochanski: What way?
      Kryten: I've seen the way!
      Kochanski: What way?
Kryten: Like he's a pot of cottage cheese with pineapple chunks in!
Kochanski: (aghast) How could you say that..? I have never looked at him like he's a pot of cottage cheese with pineapple chunks in! Maybe, once or twice, plain cottage cheese, but never, ever, with pineapple chunks in! Never. Never! (beat) Have I?

    • Kochanski: Have you ever listened to those clapped-out old pipes? 'Nureek'ing and 'retut'ing, and just when you expect them to 'nureek' again, they 'squrlookal'! It's enough to make a perfectly sane person crazy!!!
Kryten: It's quite amazing, the number of people those pipes have driven to the very brink of psychosis. Mr Lister spent the night in there once, and he ended up trying to suffocate himself to death with an onion sandwich.

    • Kochanski: Squirluckle? Where did Squirluckle come from? He's new!!

    • Kochanski: How did I end up here? On a ship where the fourth most popular pasttime is going down to the laundry room and watching my knickers spin dry.
Kryten: Ma'am that is not true! No-one has ever done that!
Kochanski: That's only because they don't know when you wash them! A couple of posters and a trailer for the "World's Stupidest Stuntmen" video and take it from me that laundry room will be packed!
Kryten: I believe you are doing Mr. Lister and the Cat a great dis-service ma'am! A great, great dis-service!
Cut to show Lister and the Cat staring at a Washing Machine spinning.
Cat: Wow... this is the best load yet.

    • Lister: This is one of the universal dilemmas. Something that has plagued mankind since time began: To pee or not to pee. That is the question.

  • NOTES (3)

    • A scene that was cut but appears on "Red Dwarf X-tended" has the crew stop to rest during their crawl through the air ducts. Lister tells them of the time he spent in an orphanage involving a friend called Squeaky Gibson while Kochanski mentions what life was like for her after Cyber-school.
Cat finishes off the scene with his "Me" speech as to why the Universe revolves around him.

    • This is the first episode not to feature Chris Barrie as Rimmer at any point.

    • The opening titles were omitted from this episode as they were considered to be expendable when the episode overran.
