"Regular Show, it's anything but" ~ Best Tagline EVAH
In all seriousness, the "randomness" and spontaneity is what keeps me coming.
The story aka the plot to each episode does however detract from the overall quality of this show.
Like others have mentioned, the first time this came out, JG Quintel landed a gold mine.
No need to explain how the novelty of a show that
__makes you believe these obscurely designed main characters are living a normal, real-life existence, up until the problem escalates to out of the ordinary circumstances to which the characters must resolve/respond accordingly__
was, and still is it's biggest appeal. Factor in 80's & some 90's references, catch phrases, the title characters' musical tunes with relatable + surreal humor (innuendos) and those running gags... that's how I define Regular Show....
Now, 5 seasons in, I admit I haven't been the biggest and most devoted follower, but I catch some recent episodes, and it's the little things that bug me.
-It's incredibly formulaic with almost each episode opening on Mordecai & Rigby doing something to past the time or trying get an assigned task done with Benson ending that scene with his quintessential encouraging words of advice.
-Mordecai & Rigby are lazy and/or clumsy, Rigby as the instigator, we know that by now.
-We also know there's always going to be something strange to tie in to the story's conflict ( typically worth looking forward to) and the characters learn in the end, or so we think.
-Then, there are those episodes that give the other characters backstory via, "woah, we never knew that before"; rinse & repeat.
It's a humorous cartoon first & foremost with some other notes of entertainment. Any genuine growth has been put off to the sidelines as the audience gets a message within it all.
I suppose the earlier seasons were bursting with life & creativity. Now it almost feels like Quintel's team is getting a lil' bored or yeah, they're running out of ideas.
When I first came to the Regular Show was the first show that made me say: Holy ***, whoever created this show must be either a crazy lucky dude or one of the most intelligent people in the media business. This was before the third season. It seems that the creators are running out of ideas and try to do the same thing over and over and make it seem funny. If the first seasons weren't awesome, this would be a negative review. My personal advice to the writers: Grow up and let the show grow as well. Season 4 did a bit of this, but you can do better.
Season 1: 9/10
Season 2: 9/10
Season 3: 5.5/10
Season 4: 8/10
Over All: Don't let it go down and it'll be awesome
I apologize in advance to the fans of this show, but everyone has an opinion on something, and my opinion on Regular Show is that it SUCKS! Horribly. I watched some of this show, I thought I'd give it a chance and I originally gave it a mediocre score. But now that I've watched more of it, I realize just how shitty this cartoon is.
Regular Show doesn't offer much of anything entertaining. Most of the characters aren't likable, the plots are pretty random and non-sensical, and it doesn't have very good animation. Mordecai and Rigby, I'm sad to say, are the main characters. Their pretty lazy, and from what I've seen, they do whatever they can to skip out on doing work. Rigby in particular is pretty unlikable, due to how selfish he is most of the time. The other characters don't help the show for me either. Benson is loud, Pops sort of creeps me out, and Muscle Man is just unbearable.
The plots for the show are strange. They always seem to end up with some of the characters going into some crazy other world or a different dimension, usually due to Mordecai and Rigby doing something stupid. It's just too freakin' weird for me. The humor for this show is not only bad, but it can be unbearibly annoying, particularly whenever Muscle Man ends a question with "My Mom! Wooooo!" Also, there are a lot of innuendos in Regular Show. Isn't it great that Cartoon Network is showing kids a show with a raccoon joking about 'pulling hammies'? NO! It's not great CN! What are you thinking nowadays?! I'm really concerned for the next generation of children.
I will admit that Regular Show has got some really cool music. Skips is a pretty cool character, and Mordecai has his moments. But apart from those things, I do not like this cartoon at all. It's highly overrated, and I don't get why this show is so freakin' popular. Ugh! I'm gonna get so much heat for this review. Oh well.
This show is awesome. Even though the retro themes don't fit today it seems totally contemporary. In fact the retro styles are used very well to creating a certain flair to the show. Also it just rocks. I rank this show so high because it's written so that kids can watch it or even adults (some jokes go over the heads of younger audiences). Also even though it appeals to adults it's not offensive to children to watch. I like the subtle but clever tones, plots, premises, and character backgrounds that at first glance are well hidden but when you get the feel of the characters you learn to appreciate them. I also rank this show high because it seems there are too many very terrible TV shows out there to watch. Too many of them follow formulas too closely and have no soul or spirit. Even if Regular Show does follow some sort of writing-formula it still seems to have that certain creativity thrown into the mix that gives it it's unique flavor.
If you're going to mistake this for some of CN's half-assed shows like Uncle Grandpa, Annoying Orange or)Legends of China then you're dead wrong. Because this is a show actually worth looking at. But I must warn you, it's very random. I'm going to go over the show.
What it is about:
A blue-Jay named Mordecai and a racoon named Rigby that work at a park for a hot tempered gumball machine named Benson. Mordecai and Rigby, while they are supposed to be working, they usually end up slacking off, which causes Benson to get pissed off.
Now here is what I think of it.
Has a nice "Retro" style feel to it.
Most characters are very likeable.
Unique art and character design.
Very funny jokes.
This doesn't really bother me but it really lacks a theme song. C'mon Cartoon Network, for a show this good you have to put some effort into the intro.
I wasn't really interested when I saw it the first time, it was too weird for my liking. However, when I bought the DVD in Summer 2012, I realized I was missing out on everything! And as for some of you who think the series is going downhill, calm down! In my honest opinion, each season is getting better and better. Basically, I could go on and on and on about how good it is, but just go see it for yourself, I know it's one of CN's greatests cartoons ever since Chowder.
This show absolutely does NOT beat the classic cartoon network shows, but it's probably the best show on CN right now, along with adventure time.
The show is about a blue jay named mordecai and a racoon named rigby working at a park. The can be interesting and lovable characters sometimes, but other times, they act like complete and total JERKS!!!! If you thoght that eddy and bloo were jerks, then you should see how these two act sometimes. Anyways, other characters include muscle man, a fat guy with green skin, pops, an old man with a lollipop shaped head who acts like a pedophile most of the time, high five ghost, a ghost with a hand on his head, skips, a wise old yeti, margaret, a red cardinal who is also mordecai's love interest and benson, mordecai and rigby's boss who is a gumball machine( no joke )with anger management issues.
So yeah, I think the show is pretty good. The show has some cool 80s music and references, alot of adult jokes and halloween specials that are actually creepy..
Of course, this show does have some faults. Like I said before, the two main characters can act like total jerks sometimes. And muscle man's my mom jokes got old really fast. Speaking of muscle man, I wish they won't make so many episodes about him and make more episodes about high five ghost. And speaking of episodes, some of the newer episodes were a little boring( some, not all) .
But other than that, this show is pretty good and could probably save CN from all these crappy shows like jhonny test, scooby doo mystery inc and the problem solverz.
This show is great. It is a symbol of hope for cartoon network with the Idiotic World of Gumbitch and Dar-addict. Think of it this way. Would you rather watch this or the half animated Spongebob replica aka the "Amazing" world of gumball?
Okay, why does this show have a 7 right now? I remember being here about a year ago, and this show had a very high score. Why lower it? This is the main reason why this site isn't noticed much. I'm only on this site to say this stuff to the reviewers, not the creators of the show.
I am a huge critic of any new shows that air on Cartoon Network. I think they are all terrible. The Looney Tunes Show was a great way to ruin a classic, Amazing World of Gumball is probably one of the worst shows I've ever seen, Johnny Test is just plain awful, Teen Titans Go was another way to ruin a classic and Uncle Grandpa is just... yea... Anyway, Regular Show finally brought back some great humor to Cartoon Network with its more mature themed plots. I like the violence displayed, the language and overall attitude of the show. Quite honestly, I do not know how this show even airs on Cartoon Network. To me, it seems way too violent compared to the other shows that Cartoon Network airs with the exception of Adventure Time.
Regular show is just plain funny. I love the humor incorporated in it. The fact that something strange happens whenever Mordecai and Rigby do something. The plots are very good and always bring a good laugh. The only problem I have with this show is Muscle Man. He can be annoying at times with his "My Mom" jokes and such. Other than that, this show is by far the best new thing Cartoon Network has aired in years. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good cartoon to watch.
This is probably my favorite show ever. I absolutely love the characters because they are all so different. I also love how the show is so weird. The weirdest things happen on the show like a random guy will attack the characters or their video game brings out a villian. Overall sweet show.
Dis show is bad! It isnt da worst show compored to sahows liek gravety fallz or adventure timez . Those shows are truuly bad. This show is juust under OK. I agree wih orca36 review. It badd and the creators should all die with alex hirch in a fire and be bured in the trash where noone will carre about them evur.
All these shows should be replaced with problem slovers beacause problem solvers is gud.
Lemme say this. I think this show makes everything I'm a fan of (except Pokemon) look like Almost Naked Animals, and makes Almost Naked Animals look like the Problem Solverz. If you look at the title and the oldest previews, you basically would think that Regular Show is the most BORING show Cartoon Network has ever placed on the air. Guess what? You're wrong!
Basically, the show focuses on the workers of the park. They actually mix the personalities around.
Rigby may act like the stereotypical teenager, but he does get into the action when needed.
Mordecai is also considered a slacker, but he does have a life. He has a crush on Margaret, though it's a bit well-hidden, he actually cares about working sometimes, and to top it all off, he's actually more mature than Rigby.
Muscle Man and Hi-Five Ghost happens to be this rival pair of Mordecai and Rigby. Muscle Man's jokes are dry, but basically everyone in the park with the fans who believe that the "My Mom" jokes are dry and lousy. Hi-Five Ghost seems like the stereotypical best friend, though he does have some ups and downs with Muscle Man as well.
Benson is this gumball machine who happens to be pissed off all the time, but he always trusted Skips and showed no signs of negativity toward him.
Pops is an air-headed British dude. His appearance may make you think he's rich, but his so-called money is really butterscotch lollipops. I doubt those are even worth using.
Finally, there's Skips. He has a personality that nobody seems to notice in other modern-day cartoons. He's basically much like a chief of a tribe of native Americans, and does have some native American tendencies, but he actually has physically encountered the gods.
For the show, you may think that it's just a bunch of normal stuff, but the consequences happen to be more dire than what is normally expected. For example, when drinking ghost pepper puree, Mordecai, Rigby, and Benson are transported to a Beatles-like place full of chili peppers. Furthermore, after Rigby peeked at Margaret's diary during some ritual, some giant spirit resembling Margaret appeared, which could only be defeated if the performers of the ritual shared their deepest secret. Now those are some nice stories. I'll give this a 20/20.
This show really isn't adult like Duckman and Family Guy, but this is more like a cartoon for teenagers like Ren and Stimpy. I laugh so hard whenever I see that bossy boots Benson yells his head off at Mordecai and Rigby at times. The humor is so totally wild, it hurts in a good way. I wouldn't go farther when it comes to cartoons for adults, such as Family Guy, pervert Bob and Margaret, American Dad, and Duckman (they're sick).
A show that manages to blend enough OTH humor and college boy antics with simple cartoon nature. The characters are always consistent, they don't just say things to service a story. I find it funny how other reviews try to trash the things that make this show astounding. The show would be boring if 100 ties in RPS wouldn't open a portal to another dimension. If they did that, they would be justa another, average, 'regular' show.
This is a very good show. When Total Drama is not airing, I`m watching this show on Cartoon Network. It`s unpredictable, which is just the way I like things. All the main characters often have a like-hate relationship on us which makes them feel like real people you can relate to. Hope this show has many more episodes comming before the finale.
Ok, so Mordecai and Rigby can be pretty annoying sometimes with their overused phrases. Muscle Man looks + acts disgusting. Benson yells too much, Pops is childlike/naive, la di da. Despite all that, I personally think this show is really quite fantastic. It is easily relatable because of the regular, mundane tasks/problems the characters face each day, yet contains elements of science fiction and fantasy (coming from the bigger problems that arise in each episode), which are what precisely make this show so amusing and humorous.
I'm surprised by those who say they dislike this show due to the characters' flaws and the absurdity of the events that happen in each episode. First of all, characters are supposed to have flaws. Any character would be boring without flaws, which will make the audience quickly lose interest in anything that happens to him/her or anything he/she does. Yes, Muscle Man is gross, and guess what? He's supposed to be; the producers of Regular Show intended him to be that way. Benson is the angry one, Pops the naive one, Skips the helpful and wise one. Each character's unique traits + personality are what adds life to the story. And we have our two protagonists, Mordecai and Rigby. Yes, they are slackers. So what? Whether you like it or not, a lot of people in the world are similar to these two characters: they avoid what they should be doing and spend too much time on what they shouldn't be doing, which is another reason why this show is so easy to relate to. Overall, Mordecai and Rigby are decent characters who always stand by what they think is right, but make wrong decisions and mistakes, like we all do. Another thing I really like about Regular Show is how each character's story is slowly revealed, which allows the audience to realize that the characters are not what they appear to be at first (an example being Muscle Man in 'Trucker Hall of Fame'). Many of the relationship dynamics between characters are realistic and show promising development, too (Mordecai and Rigby's friendship, the friendly rivalry Mordecai+Rigby and Muscle Man+Hi Five Ghost, Mordecai and Margaret's friendship evolving into romance, Rigby growing increasingly fond of and comfortable around Eileen, etc).
As for the 'nonsensical' plot ... what can I say? This is a cartoon. The stories in each episode are meant to be entertaining in a silly bizarre way (to put irony to the show's title). In my opinion, the unpredictability of the show is actually one of the main things that makes it so appealing. I feel as though a lot of people are now expecting cartoons to be much more than just cartoons, in that they must all take thematic approaches and bring out ~*~*~deep, meaningful, life-changing~*~*~ , messages in each episode. No. It's a cartoon. Believe it or not, most cartoons are meant mainly for fun, not to give away life lessons.
Also, in regards to the show's salty sense of humor so many people seem to have a problem with, I honestly don't find any of the things in Regular Show very profane. I really don't think children will pick up any terribly bad behavior or understand any of the innuendos hinted. But well, that's just my opinion.
I know that Cartoon Network has created some of the most abysmal cartoons imaginable, but this isn't the best thing ever.
Characters 50% (F-)
sometimes the characters can be really irritating and Muscle Man's appearance is just disturbing (Dear Cartoon Network; STOP giving THE male CHARACTERS NIPPLES AND MAKING the FAT MALES LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE BOOBS! IT'S NOT FUNNY, IT'S GROSS! )
Plot: 50% (F-)
The plots either barely make sense or they're just plain dumb.
Humor: 0% (F-)
Mordecai and Rigby going "oooooh" a lot isn't funny, it's annoying. Also the characters can get mean spirited which also isn't funny, either way there's nothing amusing about it.
The show was good in the first 3 seasons, this season has being alittle weak. They really need to stop centering episodes around muscle man, he is overuse and he better as a supporting character not a main. They should foucs more episodes around HFG, skips and thomas.
This show was really good for the first couple seasons. That's the main reason why my score is so high. The episodes following kinda sucked. The show got corny and not as funny as usual. Benson always seems to be pissed about something, which adds the humor to the show. You guys need to make interesting episodes instead of Rigby trying to do a pull-up
Okay this show is simply amazing, enough said. It may have some weak plot points, but overall, compared to the rest of Cartoon Network's shows, this is the one to watch. While not as good as adventure time, I still love it. Every episode is entertaining to watch, and that says something.
Just like Nick and Disney, Cartoon Network has gone on a downward spiral with abominations like "The Amazing World of Gumball" and "The Problem Solverz"... After watching a few episodes, I grew fond of the show. It's hilarious, I LOVE the characters, and it has interesting story-lines. Overall, pretty satisfying show.
