  • Sydney and Nigel go to the Middle East and try to recover a ancient jewel.

Sydney and Nigel arrive in the Middle East to catch up with the queen of the country - but she has mysteriously died. Although they are shocked, they go to the Sultan's Palace and offer to continue the queen's quest to find the Star of Nadir. This jewel has religious and political power associated with it - but the Sultan is not interested in the hypothetical jewel. He wants to marry off his daughter (Alia) to a son of a reactionary political leader (Hakim) - to stabilise the country's future. Sydney is incensed by this forced marriage and the potential change to the country's political climate. With Alia's help, Sydney and Nigel arrive at a dig site where some army types are looking for the jewel. After knocking out all the guards, Sydney finds the right cave and the magnificent jewel. The Sultan's guards arrive, arrest them and try to take the jewel from Sydney. She fights them off and realises that the guards are supporting Hakim - and probably killed the queen. Sydney, Nigel and Alia return back to the Sultan's Palace and give him the jewel.

This story tries to meld a potentially explosive political tale with the relic hunting experience - but it doesn't work too well. It makes sense that independent Sydney is unwilling to take a back seat to any man and continues about her relic hunting business. But Carlo Rota's performance as the Sultan is very low key - and he doesn't react to anything in the story (even the possible murder of his wife and the attempt on his own life!). It is very different to his amusing performance as Simon Lagerfeld in another story.moreless
