  • Confrontation scene is powerful television. (spoilers)

    (spoilers)

The scene in which they confront father Murphy made my hair stand on end, and that was before the gunshot. Seeing Father Murphy rationalize his deeds was revolting. Knowing that Tommy's brother was going to make an arrest, I was encouraged and moved. When Ricky's older brother Kevin steps in, I thought him brave.

The dolly zoom on survivor and perpetrator is the reverse of the one in Goodfellas. In Rescue Me (Brains), the background recedes as the characters enlarge. The gunshot was so pointless, unexpected, tragic. The scenes that followed were skillful storytelling, I must admit, despite my aversion for the musical montage device.

Each cut in the confrontation scene and following montage had a different hue: Red in the sanctuary, comfortable green of the side room, splashed with golden light. Kevin emerges from the red glow of the doorway.

Red and green fighting for space as Tommy attacked Father Murphy. Indigo blue as Tommy settles in at home. The red purse with the drug he seeks. White and red squad car flashers. Is the red comfort, sanctuary, womb, or is it Hell? The final shot has Tommy's face illuminated in cold light from one side, warm on the other. We've learned, without words, why Tommy is so angry, why he's in so much pain, why he has tried so many ways to kill it.moreless
  • Wow. (Spoilers)

    9.5
This episode was very pivotal, showing Tommy and his brother finding out about their half-brother, and a very dark crime he's been committing. I was glad that they confronted their half-brother at the end, but I was really surprised to see how it turned out. I didn't expect it at all. I don't like how Franco keeps lying to Laura, and most likely Laura will leave him for it. I also want Tommy to get his own anti-depressant pills so that he's happy again. I'm really looking forward to the next episode, and overall I give this episode, Brains, a 9.5 out of 10.moreless

    • Chief: Garrity, I need a nurse, not a stripper.
Sean: Oh, no. She's the real deal, she's got a little hat, little uniform, the whole nine.
Chief (to Lou): If he doesn't shut up he's gonna need a goddamn nurse.
Sean: Oh, no she's a stripper and a nurse, I promise, she works at a hospital downtown.

    • (After Shelia's girlfriend hit her, she calls Tommy)
Tommy: So why're you callin' me? Call the goddamn cops. When she sets you on fire, then you can call me.

    • (After Johnny chased down a guy)
      Johnny: Tommy, what're you doin'?!
Tommy: I'm feelin' light headed again.
      Guy: Who's that?
      Johnny: That's my brother. He's a pussy.

    • (After they donated blood)
Tommy: I just feel really light headed. You don't have anymore juice, do ya?
Johnny: You almost fell getting off the table, you pussy.
Tommy: I got up too fast, okay? And you should watch your language in front of the house of God. Back me up on that.
      Father Murphey: He's right.
      Johnny: Sorry.
      Tommy: Yeah, asshole.

    • Sean: Hey, maybe I can help.
Chief: Yeah, and I can grow a vagina.

    • Sean: You call up and you tell them what kind of service you want, what kind of hours you need and they send over a bunch of nurses.
Chief Riley: I only need one.
Sean: I know, but that's like the fun of it. They send over a bunch and you choose one. It's like American Idol, you know, except it's nurses instead of singers, and you don't get to call up and vote to see who wins, and Paula Abdul's not there acting like a freak show. Actually it's not like American idol at all.

    • Johnny: You give that guy a bad nose job, a ranch with some rides on it and Liz Taylor's home number, you're looking at Michael Jackson my friend.
Tommy: Okay, first of all he's our half brother, okay? So if he's Michael Jackson, you know who that makes us? That makes me Tito and that makes you Jermaine
Johnny: Why do I gotta be Jermaine?
      Tommy: Cause I'm Tito.

    • (Tommy and Johnny are going to a blood drive)
Johnny (to Tommy): You might wanna pick up someone else's blood on the way. Yours is probably still flammable.

    • Johnny: Yo, Tommy, you'd probably forget your dick if it wasn't scotch-taped to your balls.
