As a first time viewer of this show, I have watched every single episode of this fifth season. I have been - repeatedly - angered, insulted, horrified, embarrassed, repulsed....and moved....by this series. I am not one that finds particular enjoyment with profanity or the 'little boy humor' that runs rampant. I had been drawn by the promise of a particular guest actress whose work I enjoy. And okay...I have become intrigued by some of the characters enough to be interested enough to follow the season. But this episode is one the one that I was waiting for. And it seemed as if most of the show's story lines were wrapped up. Loose ends tied.

The opening sequence with Franco in the ring with a woman for a match they have been building up turned into a lesbian insult fest....kept light with a funny exchange between Tommy and Kelly. While watching an ensuing brawl, Franco swears off boxing and his opponent swears off.....well.... Mike has been pursuing a music career with his band, Apache Stone, for most of the season and is stunned when his mates are all inticed away to back another singer. Heh. Guess he will be staying around the fire house after all.

Do I care about the color of Sean's penis It was funny when the incident was first brought up. I snickered when it was mentioned by Tatum a week later. But now? A funny incident that was WAY over done.....and unnecessary in this episode.

Lou has been a favorite. I wasn't around when Candy came and left the first time....with all of his money. I still felt the devestation and residual mistrust with the actor's characterization. Tonight's revelation came out of the blue but landed with a pop. I LOVED it. Lou kicks it up!

But it's the heavier moments that really sucked me to the fire house gang....and even more so with this episode. Black Sean's story about talking his brother off a roof (only to lose him to a drug overdose weeks later) and his attempt to do it again with the bridge jumper was hugely revealing. Especially when he shames Tommy for what he has put his family through. And it's a stirring moment for Tommy when he tells Sean not to do the same with Colleen. Nice stuff.

And the box. The mystery of the box retrieved from a fire several weeks ago by the firehouse's most recent female diversion - a 'cougar' aptly protrayed by guest Maura Tierney - was solved. It was a little predictable - and bordered on mawkish - but in the hands of any other actors but Tierney and Leary it would have fallen totally flat. Instead, two very tightly wound characters, who are so very much alike, found a moment that kinda melted their resolve to 'go it alone'....if just for one scene. VERY nice stuff. Back at the bar, Tommy collects his friends and family's accolades for leading them to the alcohol trough again.....and again. This one is headed for disaster however. Only the ghost of Jimmy seems to know how it's going to end. The show's final moments cut back and forth from the jovial scene at the bar to the car being driven by a drunken Ellie. That can't be good. Nope. There is a fiery crash at the very end. I missed Janet in this episode. I did not miss Sheila. Callie Thorne - while a likeable enough actress has been too over the top latley for me. WAY too over the top. All in all, I have become very impressed with Leary as a dramatic actor this season. His face on the camera when he was retrieving a young accident victim earlier this season initiated that. Tonight's turn with Black Sean and Kelly solidified it. I am intrigued with the chemistry between Leary and Tierney. I wouldn't mind seeing them together onsceen again. But then, Maura Tierney is that kind of an actress. She makes anyone who is good (or bad)....even better. The promos for the next episode - the 5th season finale - were not intriguing at all. In fact, after this episode, I am afraid it's going to be a bit of a let down. We'll see.....moreless
