  • Who is Sally Gilmartin? Just an ordinary English widow living on the outskirts of a small village. Or is she someone quite different?

    8.5
The set-up is intriguing. A young woman, Ruth, goes to see her mother (recently widowed) and finds her anxiously looking out of the window, scanning the hedgerows, asking Ruth nervously if she'd been followed down the winding country lanes that lead to the isolated cottage. What's wrong? Sally, a handsome, cultivated woman in her 60s, has recently had her photograph in the local paper (the service for her husband) and is now convinced she's being watched by men who might quite possibly mean to kill her. And for why? Because, thirty-five years earlier in World War II, she was recruited as a British spy and then something terrible happened... William Boyd's script places its hooks very neatly - we want to know more, we want to know why Sally had to disappear, we want to know who it was she trusted when she shouldn't have. Charlotte Rampling's grave, cold-eyed beauty and intelligence hold everything together firmly, whilst Hayley Atwell is very striking playing the same character as a young woman (even though they don't really look sufficiently alike). A pity, however, that 1940s America is so unconvincingly recreated (the locations were actually in South Africa) and that Michelle Dockery, as Ruth, is given little in the way of a real character to play.moreless
