  • Even after 35 years, there is still much for Sally to be afraid of - and now for her daughter, too.

The resolution of William Boyd's two-tier story - some of it happening in 1941 and some of it in 1976 - is quite efficiently managed, although it is as hard to believe that Rufus Sewell could age into Michael Gambon as it is to accept that Hayley Atwell could turn into Charlotte Rampling. South African locations serve better as the desert landscapes of New Mexico than as the streets of 1940s New York, and the awful implications of the plot, with our heroine incapable of trusting anyone and eventually murdering an innocent (if possibly dangerous) young colleague, do exert quite a grip. The notion that the Philby-like villain will get his comeuppance without ever being publicly exposed has a certain grim humour, and a little verbal nod to John Le Carre right at the end seems rather apposite, although this never reaches the level of the BBC's adaptations of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" or "Smiley's People".moreless
