Season 1 Episode 8

Ties That Bind

Aired Wednesday 8:00 PM Nov 12, 2012 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • The steel trussbridge filmed in this episode does not resemble the steel-reinforced concrete bridge currently spanning the Allegheny River at Freeport, PA.

    • There are some inconsistencies between the map that Randall Flynn shows to Grace in the episode and the map that Tom Neville has displayed in his house. Although Flynn's map shows that the southern portions of modern-day British Columbia have been annexed by the California Commonwealth, it does not show that the Commonwealth has annexed the Baja California peninsula of modern-day Mexico. In addition, Neville's map appears to show that the Monroe Republic controls parts of modern-day Maritime Canada, with a northern border along the Saint Lawrence River in modern-day Quebec.

    • Upon learning that Nora wants to cross the river, Mia automatically assumes that the group are traveling to Philadelphia. Although that may be a logical conclusion to which one would jump, Philadelphia is not necessarily the only destination of choice. For all Mia knew, they could have been headed toward any number of other cities along the east coast (Baltimore, Washington, Norfolk), or any number of smaller cities inland (Frederick MD, Cumberland MD, Chambersburg PA, Carlisle PA, etc.).

    • Freeport, Pennsylvania (where most of this episode's events take place) is on the banks of the Allegheny River. Morgantown, West Virginia isalong the Monongahela River. Throughout the episode, it is implied that they are on the same river (especially with Miles saying "We cross the river at Morgantown", then "If we want to get Danny back, we've got to get across that river" a short time later), which is not the case. The Allegheny and the Monongahela flow independently along separate paths, coming together to form the Ohio River in Pittsburgh.

  • Quotes

    • Miles: Corporal.
Sgt. Strausser: I'm a sergeant now.
Miles: Well, let's be honest, you're a sociopath, is what you are. Before the blackout, you'd have been locked in a rubber room.
