  • Rhoda is riotous, but off to a rocky start.

    7.5
Rhoda breaks all "the rules" – dating, that is – in this pilot episode, which depicts her visiting New York for two weeks and in that time, meeting a man who convinces her heart to leave Minneapolis. In the name of asserting herself as a "modern" woman, or perhaps simply because she's tired of waiting, Rhoda asks him out first, kisses him on the first date, and wears her heart on her sleeve – all the big "no-no's" for keeping a good guy long-term. While it makes for some comedy, as does Rhoda's overbearing mother and her droopy single sister – introduced in this episode for the first time along with Carlton, the monotone doorman – the writing is on the wall for Rhoda to end up ultimately single again. Perhaps it is just as well, as Rhoda is always at her best when she's unattached. Ah, but we just would like so much to see her settled and happy!moreless

    • Ida: (to Rhoda, about her date) This time, don't be as choosy! If I was as choosy as you, you'd only be three years old now.

    • Ida: Brenda, I'm very worried about you, It's bad enough that you live in this neighborhood but there's a drunk sleeping in your lobby. You ought to tell the doorman.
      Brenda: That is the doorman

    • Ida: So, how come you're not wearing a bra?
Rhoda: Ma, I'm 33 years old.
      Ida: All the more reason!

  • NOTES (1)

    • For some reason, the opening and closing tag scenes featuring Mary Tyler Moore's guest appearance were removed when this series was sold into syndication. ...In 1992, this episode was released onto home video (VHS), with the cover art advertising that it was "uncut" - but Mary's scenes were still missing!
