  • Historical, not hysterical

    7.0
This episode is quite special, not because of its inherent comedy qualities, but because of its historical significance.. When the writers decided that the marriage of Rhoda and Joe didn't quite work for the comedy, they had the characters separate, possibly a first in a sitcom. Nowadays we are used to special episodes that deviate from the traditional formula, but in the seventies the writers/producers didn't feel that confident. This episode isn't that different from any other one, though it evolves around a serious issue. There are a few funny one-liners, but as whole it feels rather forced. The drama comes across very unrealistic, especially the sudden breakdown of Rhoda and Joe's marriage, but also Rhoda's reaction to it.moreless

    • The intro sequence once again changes for this season. New clips are used, (most of which deal with Rhoda and Brenda wearing head scarves) and the music is now purely instrumental, with a bass undertone used throughout.

    • Nancy Walker was nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Drama Series category for her work on this episode.

    • Ida prepares to embark on a cross-country trek with Martin, so this would be Nancy Walker's only appearance during season three. Behind the scenes, Walker was embarking on her own journey - two sitcoms of her very own, both which failed before this television season was finished.

    • After this episode aired, actor David Groh was inundated with letters from angry viewers, pleading with him to reconcile with Rhoda and save their marriage.
