    10
One of the best episodes of the entire series, this early episode finds Rhoda as spunky as she ever was on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Before she was tied down with marriage, or undergoing the strains of separation, Rhoda was the smart, beautiful, Jewish girl we were first introduced to years before. The best moments of the episode come from the interaction between mother, Ida and daughter, Rhoda. Martin had not yet appeared on this spin-off show, so the majority of the episode is Rhoda, Brenda, Ida, and Joe. It's a shame the show didn't continue on like this or fully recognize the possibilities with a format that found Rhoda involved in a serious relationship without being 100% committed. And lots of Ida is great too. I give this a 10, to boost this episodes score. When compared to other sitcoms, this episode is not a 10. But compared to other "Rhoda" episodes, this is the cream of the crop.moreless

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Ida: You don't think I understand your problems, but I do!
Rhoda: No, you don't, Ma! For the last 37 years, your life has been settled! You don't have to worry about a job, or a place to live, or wonder every day if Pop is the right one.
Ida: You think I still don't have doubts about your father?
Rhoda: C'mon, Ma! Will you give me a break, please?
Ida: Listen, every evening when we sit in the living room, watching television, I look at him, and I think Who is he? What am I doing here with this strange man? Maybe I should have tried to make a go of it with Johnny Delvecchio.

    • Rhoda: (about Rhoda's date) Lenny, huh? Last time I saw him, it was ten years ago. He was just starting puberty.
Brenda: Well, he's just about coming out of it now.

    • Brenda: You don't know how tough it is to find an apartment in New York.
Rhoda: Oh, no? Listen, I remember the time when we used to read the obituaries to look for vacancies. Now, if someone coughs, you follow them around.

  • NOTES (1)

    • Unlike the rest of season one, the intro is slightly extended in this episode. After "the first thing I remember liking that liked me back was food", Rhoda continues "in school my grades were okay, mostly Bs and Cs, except for self control", while clips of flashing letters are shown. She then continues with "I had a bad puberty". The music is slightly differently arranged to fit with the longer intro.
