During Ring of Honor's pay-per-view taping this past Saturday night in New York City, ROH Champion Nigel McGuiness broke his nose, suffered a concussion, and needed 14 internal and external stitches after he smashed his face on the guard rail. While there is talk that he may take some time off, he worked last night's Final Battle show in New York City, cutting a promo about his match the night before.

Bryan Danielson and Rocky Romero also suffered concussions at Ring of Honor's pay-per-view taping in New York City.

Speaking of Bryan Danielson he will get a ROH title shot at the Ring of Honor event on February 23rd in New York City after winning last night's four way main event that featured Chris Hero, Austin Aries, and Takeshi Morishima.

    - KENTA's work visa has not been renewed so as of now he won't be working any ROH dates in 2008. Marafuji and Morishima will continue to work limited dates with ROH in 08 and there are plans to try and bring in other talents such Go Shiozaki as well.

    - Bryan Danielson suffered a concussion on Saturday in his match with Takeshi Morishima.

    - As previously reported ROH will release two complilation DVDs in stores nationwide on 4/1/08. These two releases are being distributed by KOCH vision the former WWE DVD and CD distributer. One release will feature the bloodiest matches in ROH history while the other will feature top names in wrestling who have passed through ROH such as Matt Hardy, CM Punk, MVP, Samoa Joe and others.

    - Mike Johnson reports that ROH drew a sell out crowd of 1,200 fans on Saturday and around 1,000 fans on Sunday for the Manhattan Center double shot.

    - ROH's next live events will be in 1/11 in Boston, MA and 1/12 in Edison, NJ.

According to a report by The Wrestling Observer, Ring of Honor booker Gabe Sapolsky was in a car wreck yesterday but is doing fine right now. Sapolsky's car went out of control and was hit by a truck. His car was destroyed and he required 18 stitches to close facial cuts. Sapolsky said with all things considered he was extremely lucky.

-Former WWE star Christopher Nowinski was in attendance at last night's Ring of Honor show in Boston, MA to meet with company officials on a method of preventing and dealing with concussions suffered by ROH performers. Concussions occur more often in the Ring of Honor due to their more high impact **** The company would like to be more proactive at protecting their wresters' health. Nowinski is a former WWE star that had his career cut short from suffering multiple concussions. He now studies concussions in sports as he formed the Sports Legacy Institute.

Jack Evans has been pulled from tonight and tomorrow night's shows and will undergo surgery in which four plates will be inserted into his face. He'll miss about six weeks of action though he was a crazy bastard and told ROH officials he'd be more than willing to work the two shows.

Tomorrow marks the sad Anniversary of the passing of Doug Gentry who was a HUGE part of ROH's early years and many believe had it not been for his dedication to the promotion it would have been dead in the water after 2003. He passed at the too young age of 34 due to a rare bacterial disease on his heart.

Chris Hero, The Briscoes, and Claudio Castagnoli will miss the Sixth Anniversary show as they will be touring with NOAH.

A new Japanese star about to debut for the company will be announced over the weekend.

Kevin Steen is getting a world title shot! He won a 8 man tournament in Long Island and beat Go Shiosaki in the finals. I was there.

Also, Zack Gowen is now in ROH. He made a suprise debut as a heel joining that stable with jimmy jacobs. It was pretty wierd seeing him as a heel. Actually it was pretty wierd seeing him wrestle. And he wrestled pretty damn good.

Punk & Cabana: Second City Reunion

From the Wrestling Observer:website reporting on the last OVW tapings:.

--Final OVW show with WWE talent last night in Louisville, taped for Saturday's OVW TV show. . .C.M. Punk & Colt Cabana b Seth Skyfire & Domino. Punk gave a speech to end the show and promised he would be back. If that's the case, he'd better hope it's a one-shot. (thanks to Mike Giralico)

How awesome is it that Cabana and Punk were able to team up once again, if just on the OVW tapings. They were such a great duo as The Second City Saints that its great they can revisit it. News of this team up made me really happy. Maybe one day we'll see them team up again on the main WWE programming.

ROH Debuts in Coral Springs, Returns to Cleveland

Ring of Honor announced a new location for a show in Florida late in the year and a return to a former venue in the Ohio area:

Ring of Honor will debut in Coral Springs, FL on Friday night, October 10th with a 7:30pm belltime. The event will be held at the Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Drive, Coral Springs, FL 33065.

ROH is very excited to announce the return to Cleveland, OH on August 15th. Tickets will go on sale next Friday at 10am.

The Florida venue comes in the wake of doing two shows in the Orlando area (although Coral Springs is several hours away from there). ROH had previously stopped to run at Grey's Armory in Cleveland due to lower attendance numbers than anticipated. That said, ROH has shown a willingness to return to locations they had previously dropped, see: Boston, MA. Maybe a return to the city will help rekindle interest in the product there.

    Other News Via PWInsider.com

    More news from Mike Johnson:

"According to ROH sources, The 5/10 Hammerstein Ballroom show has been one of the hottest selling tickets in company history, perhaps ever. They have already sold most of the ringside seats and are back to the ninth row on the floor."

Sounds great for Ring of Honor. It was a huge risk to choose to run downstairs but hopefully running in a bigger venue will turn out to mean more fans will come to the shows. Now it remains to be seen if they can sell the first balcony seats. Upper balcony will not be sold, but really that's a good deal for fans (although I'm sure ROH would want to sell them out if it was realistically possible) because of how far up those seats are, it wouldn't be the best view anyway.

"Jack Evans is recovering from his facial injuries on schedule and hopes to be back in the ring by April at the earliest."

Evans had previously stated this in interviews, so no surprises there.

"Based on the success of the recent video profile on ROH champ Nigel McGuinness, ROH will be doing more deep personality profiles. The belief is that the company needs to do them to try and get the characters over more and to give the audience more an idea of their goals and background. ROH will be doing a sitdown interview with Nigel shortly to get over his heel turn."

I love the idea of a sitdown interview, and its appropriate for Nigel considering the turn in his character needs a bit more fleshing out because of the sudden "Feel heel" mode he went into in NYC. Now, the question is who will do the interview... Prazak, Leonard or maybe... a returning JIMMY BOWER! And will Nigel give a Lariat to the interviewer?

Oh god, please let their also be sitdown interviews for Delirious and for Kevin Steen and El Generico as a team!

"Erick Stevens and Roderick Strong are putting together the first show for their independent promotion in Florida, which debuts next month."

Both men make Florida their home, so it's cool to know that they are going to try to run there and see how far they can go with it. Best of luck to them. Man, is Florida becoming the place to be in March or what?

After a long and punishing stay, BJ Whitmer has decided to walk away from Ring Of Honor. ROH and Whitmer have now officially parted ways. Everyone in ROH wants to thank BJ for his immense contributions to the company.Whitmer, a leader in the locker room, set an example in and out of the ring. He had the most service time on the ROH roster after making his debut on the very first show of 2003. Spanky had feverishly recommended Whitmer to ROH officials throughout 2002. Whitmer finally received his opportunity at "Revenge On The Prophecy" on January 11th, 2003 as part of the first ever Four Corner Survival vs. Paul London, Homicide and Colt Cabana. Whitmer impressed in this bout, which put the Four Corner Survival on the map to become a signature ROH match. Whitmer never looked back.He did it all in his ROH career. You want a title belts? Whitmer is a four time ROH Tag Team Champion with Dan Maff and Jimmy Jacobs as partners. You want great feuds? No ROH fan will ever forget his battles against CZW and Jimmy Jacobs. You want matches that did big business? Look at his "Steel Cage Showdown" vs. Jimmy Jacobs or No Rope Barbed Wire Match vs. The Necro Butcher. How about great matches? Well, just look at his battles against Homicide at "Main Event Spectacles" or Samoa Joe at "Hell Freezes Over" to name a few.It is no coincidence that ROH officials chose BJ Whitmer to open up ROH's first ever pay-per-view "Respect Is Earned." Whitmer's consistency and seniority earned him that once-in-a-lifetime spot. BJ Whitmer had some frustrations during the past year. When his own Hangmen Three group turned on him to join Sweet & Sour Inc., Whitmer had taken one beating too many. It was time for him to walk away.We wish BJ the best in his future endeavors. He was a credit to the locker room, a performer who gave his all to the fans and is a quality person. Thank you, BJ Whitmer.

    pwinsider.com and rohwrestling.com

-ROH is looking at bringing in some other TNA talent in the future. Although TNA pulled some talent when ROH announced their initial PPV taping, it wasn't due to heat between the companies but because they didn't want any confusion in the marketplace. ROH is still free to book TNA talent as long as they aren't used on events that are being taped for PPV or sold nationally via DVD outside of the ROH website.

-ROH is asking fans to politely contact Best Buy about carrying their national DVD releases as the chain is only carrying them online, not stocking them in retail. According to one person I spoke to familiar with the retail system, there is a huge glut of MMA/pro wrestling DVDs on the market right now and since they don't immediately move unless they have UFC or WWE branding, there's limited space for newer product and ROH is brand new as a national retail brand. We are currently running a contest giving away 5 sets of the new DVDs, so be sure to check that out on the main page of PWInsider.com.

-There were no injuries coming out of Orlando events. Ring of Honor booker Gabe Sapolsky wrote about the company's Florida debut, which drew 2,800 total over two day, at this link. The Orlando DVDs are already in production. ROH will return to Orlando on 10/11 and debut in Coral Springs, FL the night before.

-Joey Mathews continues to play the "players coach" role in ROH. The most recent example was his match with Jigsaw in Detroit. The goal is to have Mathews work with faces that use tons of moves, but little else. He is working with them to have then properly play babyface; take the heat, sell better and then make the babyface comeback.

-Chris Hero is working what is described as a "NOAH-Oriented S.tyle" these days in ROH. This is to get him away from the comedy heel role, which everyone likes and would cheer for.

    Ryan Clark reports:

    Credit: PWInsider.com

The crowd at the ROH show in Philadelphia last night was down for the first time in awhile.

Davey Richards is done with ROH for awhile as he will be touring with Pro Wrestling NOAH and staying in Japan for much of the summer. Larry Sweeney will probably claim credit for sending Richards to Japan.

Eddie Kingston was only booked for the two ROH weekend shows, but they may bring him back down the line.

Julius Smokes missed the two ROH shows this weekend and has not been in contact with the promotion, so his future is up in the air.

ROH reached a deal with the NWA to use the NWA Title with Adam Pearce since he is the NWA Champion and to have it defended on the 6/27 show in Dayton, Ohio. ROH Champion Nigel McGuinness will face Pearce in a title vs. title match on 6/27.

    ROH Business Notes
    Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Here is the latest edition of ROH Business Notes at ROHwrestling.com: -Production will begin immediately on ROH's next pay-per-view. "Respect Is Earned II" will premiere on iN DEMAND, The DISH Network and TVN cable systems on August 1st featuring a triple main event.

    The top three matches are:

    Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black defend the ROH World Tag Team Titles vs. Bryan Danielson & Austin Aries;

    Nigel McGuinness defends the ROH World Title vs. Go Shiozaki;

Roderick Strong vs. Erick Stevens in a Fight Without Honor.

Look for something soon regarding ROH back on PPV in Canada.

-Bryan Danielson worked a dark match for WWE last Monday with the permission of Ring Of Honor.

-ROH was close to having Ric Flair as a special guest on the 8/2 Manhattan event. However, the deal is now not possible. If ROH had secured Flair attempts would have been made to get Kenta Kobashi to the event so that Kobashi and Flair would have the opportunity to shake hands in front of the crowd. There are no talks of Kobashi returning to ROH.

-As of this moment, Jerry Lynn is only scheduled for the 6/28 Chicago date. It is possible Lynn will be added to more shows.

-Lance Storm will not be wrestling at the 7/25 and 7/26 events, but he will have a role on each show and be available for autographs. Storm will also be active in the locker room giving advice to the upcoming ROH stars. Storm has already taken his own time and unselfishly given advice to several members of the ROH roster after watching the PPVs.

It's going to be a quiet few weeks for ROH as they are off live shows until the Japan tour on 9/13 and 9/14. The top matches on 9/13 will be a non-title bout between ROH champ Nigel McGuinness and Bryan Danielson and ROH Tag Team champs The Age of the Fall vs. The Briscoes. 9/14 will feature McGuinness defending against Jimmy Jacobs and Danielson challenging NOAH GHC Junior champion Yoshinobu Kanemaru. The promotion will then tape a PPV 9/19 in Boston, MA and run Glory by Honor on 9/20 in Philadelphia at the former ECW Arena.

ROH's debut in the St. Louis market on 12/6 goes on sale today at the ROH website.

As I noted in my WWE Madison Square Garden live report over the weekend, ROH owner Cary Silkin and Larry Sweeney were sitting ringside at the event. WWE World champ CM Punk, obviously a former ROH champ and main eventer, hugged both of them as he came to the ring. After defeating JBL, Punk climbed to the top of the Steel Cage and pointed down to Silkin. He later laid in the ring making snow angels, something Punk did in his final DVD appearance for Ring of Honor, running into a blizzard in Long Island, NY and making snow angels outside the building. It was a pretty cool moment in that "not forgetting your roots" sort of way.

As noted elsewhere on the site, former ROH personality Becky Bayless was arrested for DUI over the weekend

Expect Naomichi Marufuji to challenge Nigel McGuinness for the ROH title shortly. That should be nothing short of awesome.

Since ROH is running the former ECW Arena in Philadelphia on 9/20, I am officially calling for Don E. Allen to be booked on the undercard against Bobby Dempsey in what would obviously win match of the year. Make it happen ROH!

The most recent ROH DVD releases are Vendetta II, Battle for Supremacy and the Respect is Earned II PPV. The company is running a $10 sale on older titles at www.rohwrestling.com.

Jim Ross updated the Q&A section of JRsbarbq.com. The following items are among the highlights.

Ross on Takeshi Morishima's tryout match:
"I haven't heard a word about how well his matches went. I watched his match in Moline and it was o.k. Not bad, not great. It looks like Morishima might want to focus on his athletic conditioning and hit the gym more frequently. I am not being negative here only realistic. Morishima has 'something' that seems like it might be worth exploring. I like his timing and there is no doubt potential with this young man."
