  • A friend of Cody and Nick's hires the trio to track down her missing father, who is in some kind of trouble in Mexico after he went there with his new, gold-digging wife. Not one of my favourite plots, but some very good moments...moreless

    8.5
The first couple of episodes after the (great) Pilot really struggled to find their feet, but, coming after 'Hatchet Job' (which I loved), 'The Mean Green Love Machine' really typifies the upward trend in story quality, with the show really finding it's footing around this point.

This probably isn't one of my all-time favourite 'Riptide' plots, but it has some decent character moments – most, as per usual, featuring Murray. I love the introduction of his "hep rap" (mentioned in numerous future episodes), and the bar scene, where Nick and Cody are guiding him, via earpiece, how to pick up the gold-digging Dee Dee (a very attractive Mary-Margaret Humes) is really funny, probably one of the first season highlights.

The plot is decent enough (as one would expect coming from the master, Stephen J. Cannell), although I did feel it dipped at a couple of points. It could maybe have done with some kind of b-plot to round things out a little.

One little touch I did like, was how Brandy had gone to numerous other agencies before coming to the Riptide trio for help – a touch that Cannell would use in several of his shows, dating as far back as 'The Rockford Files'.

I know some fans count this as one of their first season favourites. Personally, I quite like it, but I wouldn't say it would be one of my outstanding favourites of the season (though much of that is due to the high quality of some of the other episodes). It is moments such as the aforementioned bar scene with Murray that really stand out to me. I give 'The Mean Green Love Machine' a reasonable 8.5 out of 10.moreless
