Rituals

Show Summary

Rituals was a syndicated soap opera set in Winfield - a small, Virginia "suburb" of Washington D.C. Focusing on the lives of the faculty and students at a small, exclusive women's college, the story revolved around three Virginia families: the wealthy Chapins, the middle-class Robertsons and the blue-collar Gallaghers.
The would-be series boasted many well-known names - Jo Ann Pflug/Tina Louise (Taylor Chapin Field von Platen #'s 1 & 2), George Lazenby, Greg Mullavey, Monte Markham - as well as soap icons Christine Jones, Kin Shriner and Mary Beth Evans. However, the show was plagued by cast changes, destroying any sense of continuity - no less than six characters were played by two different people during it's one year run. With the departure of Jo Ann Pflug, the ratings, never strong to begin with, took a determined nose dive.
In an effort to stimulate fan interest, Telepictures Productions, the show's parent company, held a contest allowing fans to determine the direction of the plot. There was to be a murder - with fan's deciding who both the victim and the killer were to be - as well as the motive for the crime. As it turned out, the wife of Carter Robertson (Monte Markham), Christina Robertson (Christine Jones), had a sister, Sara (Lorinne Vozoff/Laurie Burton), who was married to low-life Eddie Gallagher (Greg Mullavey). Gallagher was shot and killed by his daughter Noel (Karen Kelly), a student at Haddon Hall - in self-defense after years of physical and sexual abuse. Alas, this saga failed to entice the viewing public and the series was cancelled.
Rituals aired from September 10, 1984 to September 6, 1985. In all, 260 25-minute episodes were produced. Several years later, the series resurfaced in France as La Ligne de Chance, The Line of Chance (1989-1990).moreless
