Robbery Homicide Division had the potential to be one of the all-time great cop shows. Unfortunately, it only lasted half a season before mediocre (but not awful) ratings brought it down. Michael Mann knows how to do cop dramas, as he showed in Heat, and in Robbery Homicide Division he gives us a brilliant vision of crime in Los Angeles. The plots of each episode are secondary to the atmosphere the show brings. The use of high-definition video emphasizes this even more and gave the series a somewhat surreal visual touch that was pitch-perfect.
It's unfortunate that the series could not survive, and even more unfortunate that it has not been brought to DVD like other cancelled gems.
