Mark McKinney was offered a different role first, but expressed interest in playing Tom instead, where he plays opposite Megan Follows.
It tickled Robson Arms producers to hear the former star of Anne of Green Gables swear like a trucker in one of the scenes.
(looking around the new apartment)
Janice: It's nice. It's charming.
Henry: Why couldn't Dad have moved out?
Janice: Henry!
(she tries to close a drawer in the kitchen and can't)
Janice: It's a fixer-upper.
(the drawer slams shut, causing the window to slam down, and plaster to fall)
Janice: It's a shit-hole.
Janice: Okay, you're making yourself a sandwich for lunch, and you cut yourself. What do you do?
Henry: Put the fingertip in the sandwich. Added protein.
Ruby: I like your shirt.
Henry: It's a jersey. It was my dad's.
Ruby: Is he dead?
Henry: Nah, he's just in Burnaby, shacked up with jailbait.
(explaining 'poking' to Henry and Ruby)
Ricky: Dancing the horizontal mambo, uh... doing the beast with two backs.
(Henry and Ruby look confused)
Ricky: Screwing, getting laid. (making hand motions) Sex.
Henry: Ewww... that's definitely not what my mom needs.
Ricky: It's what everyone needs.
(checking out Tom's apartment, from down the hall)
Henry: No way! He lives right above us!
Ruby: So?
Henry: So, he's the sex maniac!
Ruby: What?
Henry: We hear noise from up there all the time... sex noises!
Ruby: So you know he knows how it's done.
Henry: Yeah, but he won't be interested if he has a girlfriend or a wife.
Ruby: It didn't stop your dad.
Henry: If he's poking someone else, he's not poking my mom.
Tom (to Janice): You know what? Stop looking at me like I'm such a freak, all right? Because you're the mother with the child who's breaking into people's apartments trying to pimp for his mom!
Susin Nielsen won a 2006 Canadian Screenwriters Award for "Best Half-Hour Drama" for this episode.
(Henry tells Tom that he broke into the apartment on behalf of his mom)
Tom: Your mom? Who is she, the neighbourhood Fagan?
When Tom calls Henry's mom "Fagan", this is a reference to the character of that name in Oliver Twist, a novel by Charles Dickens. Fagan was the head thief who got children to do his dirty work for him.
