    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • The three songs and musicians/groups named by Nick in the scene in the laundry room are The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot, Rise Up by The Parachute Club and Calling Occupants by Klaatu. All are Canadian artists.

    • QUOTES (6)

      • (Ricky struggles to help Grandma Tan into her support hose)
Ricky: Maybe we could get her a place in the old folks' home.
Ruby: If we lived in the Arctic, we could stick her on an ice floe.

      • (about Grandma Tan)
Ricky: Great, a self-appointed security guard with glaucoma.
Toni: She just wants to feel useful, and better over there than under my feet.

      • (about the new security camera)
        Toni: How much?
Yuri: Well, you can't put a price on peace of mind. If it was good enough to control the border, it'll catch shoplifters.
Grandma Tan (in Cantonese): It's a piece of junk.

      • (about the monitor picture for the new security camera)
Toni: This is as good as it gets?
Yuri: No, it just needs a little tweak (he fiddles with the knobs, but the picture continues to flip) ...There we go. It's all in here, anyway. (he throws a huge instruction manual on top of monitor, takes some candy and leaves)
        Toni: What is this? Russian?

      • (Grandma Tan peers into her empty tea cup)
Hal: Woah, is she reading the tea leaves? Someone read my tea leaves once in Hong Kong.
Ricky (in Cantonese, to Grandma Tan): He thinks you read tea leaves.
Grandma Tan (in Cantonese, to Ricky): I do, for a price. (in English, to Hal) Ten dollars.

      • Grandma Tan (in Cantonese): Bored housewife steals for kicks. Doesn't care that she's hurting the little guy....
Ricky (translating): She says, 'You must return that which does not belong to you.'
Grandma Tan (in Cantonese): In some countries, you know what they do with thieves? (she makes a motion like she's cutting off her hand)
Ricky (translating): And if you do not heed her warning, bad fortune will befall you.
