Episode Summary

Matt Sings the Wrong Song
At the end of last nights show, Magni, Phil and Chris were in the bottom three. They were joined as potential bottomers by Zayra, Ryan and Matt. Chris leads off with The Doors’ “L.A. Woman” doing an average job. Phil goes next with the Switchfoot song “Stars” which doesn’t appear to have impressed Supernova any more than Chris’s performance. Bringing up the rear was Matt. The judges had questions about both Chris and Phil’s skills, but they couldn’t ignore Matt’s song selection faux pas, and tossed him out of the competition.moreless

  • A plot twist, or "that's why they call it reality"

After Dilana does the first encore of the season, we discover that the contestants will get to pick the song they want on elimination night! Sounds like a big advantage for the performers, doesn't it?

Chris comes on first, and sets the bar low with a spotty performance of "LA Woman". He could have really used the song to display some vocal gymnastics, but there were none. Phil goes next and has an equally questionable performance. By the time Matt came on stage, I was thinking if I was Tommy I'd tell Matt not to bother, and just kick Chris AND Phil out.

Matt's got a great voice, and probably shouldn't have been in the bottom three. He certainly wasn't one of the three worst performances from night #1. Then... Matt informs them he's going to do Duran Duran's "Planet Earth". I'm still okay with that, because it's a well written song and played with balls and guitars could really rock.

Instead, we were treated to the standard Duran Duran arrangement, and Phil even through in a little Simon le Bon dance step at one point.

Matt might tear up Idol or America's got Tallent, or some other show, but not here. Not when you pull that tune out to display your hard rock credibility.moreless
  • If you don´t want to know how gets eliminated... don´t read...

In the first elimination Matt is dismissed and it was the one who had to be. He just didn´t get the Supernova thing... if you are gonna sing for them, common! Duran Duran! when he said that, he started to dig his grave...

For the rest of the episode, practically the only thing exciting was seen againg Dilana, she is so fantastic. It´s just that the idea of seen the three with the minor votes sings, for some thing they didn´t get them, they didn´t sing well!!!

But, I have to say that with the weeks it should get very interesting because also the good ones will get in some point in the bottom three, so it will be exciting to watch.

I love the idea of Supernova being the ones that at the end decides who gets to leave, because after all theyre the ones who are getting their name out there for the band... not all can be leaved to the audience.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Magni says Matt was the best roommate because "he doesn't snore."

    • Last night, Dilana sang edited lines from "Lithium":
      I'm so horny,
That's okay, 'cuz so are you.

Tonight for the encore, Dilana sings the original lyrics - and gets a laugh from the judges.
      I'm so horny,
      That's okay, my willy's good.

    • Dilana won the encore this week with "Lithium" by Nirvana. Last year's semifinalist Marty Casey also won an encore with this song.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Dana: We're all hangin' out and havin' a good time in the ballroom and Lukas sucked all of the air out of the room.

    • Chris: I wouldn't be here if I wasn't one of the best singers in the world.

    • Jason: I loved that last performance, personally. That song fits you quite well, your voice and everything, the way you construct songs. Dave asked you to bring something heavier so we could see what you got. What is it you're going to play for us to redeem yourself today?
Matt: Well, it doesn't sound good, but I'm playing Duran Duran. (laughter) …which is not the first thing you think of when you're bringing the rock.

    • Lukas: Dana, I personally don't think she could handle a party with Supernova, let alone a world tour.

    • Matt: (referring to his fellow contestants, after being eliminated) I don't mind losing to these guys.

    • Jason: (prior to Matt's performance of a Duran Duran song) I'm interested to hear how you sound, so please bring the rock, por favor.

    • Dana: (about Lukas's rude question) Asking me who is going to be in the bottom three is like asking me to help me get the steak knife out of my heart.

  • NOTES (1)

    • Dilana wins the encore with Nirvana's "Lithium".
      The bottom three are:
Matt Hoffer - Planet Earth (Duran Duran)
Chris Pierson - LA Woman (The Doors)
      Phil Ritchie - Stars (Switchfoot)
