    "Gutter Balls"

The episode starts up with Mr. Bighead in the attic of his house, looking through a chest with "Ed's Bowling Stuff" written on it. His wife, Mrs. Bighead calls down to him and soon pops her head out of the attic floor to see what he's doing. She tells him the girls are here. The girls are the bowling team that Mr. Bighead is coaching. It consist of Mr. Bighead, Virginia Wolfe and Tammy. He is disappointed at himself and recalls "If only I had gotten that 1 pin...."

A flashback ensues with a young Ed "Scatter Pins" Bighead getting ready to roll the bowling ball down the alley. All he needs to win the tournament and the trophy is 1 pin. He shakes himself out of the flashback and starts talking with the girls about tonight's game. If they win this game, they are rewarded a giant trophy. Just then the last team they were suppose to play calls. They tell Mr. Bighead that they quit and joined a monastery. Thus forfeiting. Rules go that if they last team forfeits, no one wins. They need some suckers to play!

Mr. Bighead heads over to Rocko's house where Filburt, Heffer and Rocko are playing "Spank The Monkey". He offers them the chance to play a game of bowling. They accept the challenge. After getting their team shirts (The Losers is their team name) and some smelly pairs of shoes, they are ready to start on Lane 13. But before they start, Mr. Bighead has another flashback to his championship game. All he needs is 1 pin to win. He intentionally rolls his first ball down the gutter. What a jerk. He comes out of his flashback as the game starts. Mrs. Bighead with a strike. Filburt with a strike. Virginia Wolfe with 1 pin. Heffer get's a strike but in the wrong lane. After the game is about half done, Mr. Bighead realizes that it's too close. So he has to do something to ensure a victory.

He first gives Rocko a helium ball to mess him up but it doesn't work. Then he puts grease on the bowling lane so Heffer slips. That doesn't work either. Virginia bowls another 1 and Mr. Bighead lets her have it. She sticks up for herself and leaves Ed alone with the other girls, but they leave as well. Back on the lanes, Filburt bowls a strike a ties the game. Ed then dresses up as Mrs. Bighead to trick everyone so he can win the trophy. All he needs is 1 pin to win. Sound familiar? Mr. Bighead has another flashback to his championship game. He gets himself ready and rolls the ball down the lane, but it sticks to his fingers and he throws it up in to the ceiling. This causes all the pillars to bring the entire bowling alley down to the ground. When the dust clears and all the debris laid out, the lane he was suppose to bowl down is completely clean and all the pins remain. Not a single pin fell. Ouch.

He comes out of the flashback and tells himself he's not goning to lose this one, too. He launches the ball down the lane. It bounces a few times and nails the center pin, getting a strike! Thus giving him the win and the trophy. As he his handed the trophy, the real Mrs. Bighead enters the bowling alley to get her purse. The bowling alley official takes the trophy and hands it over to Rocko and The Losers. Rocko thanks Mr. Bighead for the game offers to keep the trophy in the window that faces Mr. Bighead's house. What a nice guy.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • In "Gutter Balls," there's a Rubix cube in the shelves where the bowling balls go when the trophy is presented.

    • One of the models Filbert was taking pictures of has legs very similar to Bugs Bunnies.

    • When they first start going bowling in "Gutter Balls," Rocko, Heffer, and Fulburt are in lane 13. Later in the episode, Filburt bowls a strike to tie the game and the camera shows the ball going on lane 17.

    • In "Gutter Balls," Rocko says that they've (Heffer, Filburt and himself) never been bowling before but in "Jet Scream" one of the things that Heffer did in First Class was win the First Class Bowling Tournament.

Also, in a scene from "Gutter Balls" Rocko has his own personalized bowling ball. Why would he have such a thing had he never bowled before?

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Loudspeaker: Attention bowlers! The O-Town Bowlorama Amateur League Championship game will now begin. It's Bigheads Gutter Gals versus The Losers now on lane 13.
Filburt: (nervous) Lane 13? That's terribly unlucky.
Heffer: Yeah, unlucky for the slobs we're bowling against.
      Virginia: Heffer!
      Heffer: Oops, sorry mom.

    • (Ed answers the phone)
Ed: Hello? (chatter on the phone) What?
Bowler: That's right! We quit the league and joined the monastery. We even took a vow of silence. (gives friends a thumbs up) Oops.. gotta go.

    • Ed: (talking to his bowling team) Alright girls, if we win tonight's game I get.. I mean we get that giant trophy and I don't have to tell you ladies how much that trophy means to me. Remember girls, it may be true that winning isn't everything but losing is nothing!
Bev: Oh Ed, don't you think you're taking this a bit too seriously darling. (bats her eyes)
Ed: Oh that is mutinous talk Bev!

    • (Heffer is wearing platform shoes)
Rocko: Heff, where'd you get those shoes?!
Heffer: Some customer left them here. They were the only size 19s that they had.
(A wolf dressed like Gene Simmons at the rental counter)
Wolf: What do you mean you gave my shoes away?!

    • Rocko: Mr. Bighead, we had a really good time. Thanks for inviting us. And I know this trophy means more to you than it does to me, so...I'll keep it in the window that faces your house so you can look at it whenever you want.

    • Chuck/Leon Chameleon: You may now walk sans bag, kangaroo-type person.

  • NOTES (2)

    • Chameleon Brother(s): Too Gidget. Too Gidget, look like That Girl.

The Chameleon Bros. say this after styling Rocko's hair into a feminine style. This is referencing two ABC sitcoms from the 1960s, Gidget (1965-1966) starring Sandy Duncan and That Girl (1966-1971) starring Mario Thomas (whom had a similar hairstyle to what Rocko currently (and temporarily) had at that point.

    • When we see the various photos of Rocko during his photo-shoot, one of the photos makes Rocko look like "Popeye the Sailor", the famous comic strip/cartoon character

    • Visual: Title Card for "Hair Licked"

The title card is a parody of the poster for the Broadway musical Hair. Additionally, the music playing during the title card is a "Rocko" version of "Aquarius".
