Heffer: But we all know that spring is the season to clean!

      • Lyrics to Spelling Song:

        Compost Heap: R-E-C-Y-C-L-E recycle,
        C-O-N-S-E-R-V-E conserve,
        don't you P-O-L-L-U-T-E
pollute the river, sky, or sea
or else you're gonna get what you deserve!
The Ozone is in horrible condition,
        from fluorocarbons in our atmosphere!
They are too small to be seen by normal vision...
Fluorocarbons: But there's getting to be more of us each year!
Lead fluorocarbon: We come from a variety of places,
Like styrofoam containers and aerosol cans!
Fluorocarbons: We love to eat the Ozone, it's our favorite dessert,
and if you don't have an Ozone, then the sun can really hurrrrt!
(lead fluorocarbon is incinerated by the sun)
Virginia: You must admit, we make a lot of garbage!
Tammy: This dump is filled up way above the brim!
Compost Heap: If we don't make an effort to recycle...
Grim Recycler: The future could be looking mighty grim!
Heffer: (spoken) Look, it's the Grim Recycler!
Grim Recycler: (spoken) No autographs, please.
Compost Heap: Someone's cutting down the O-Town forest!
It's hot enough to sit around and grieve.
If we don't protect our flora and our fauna...
German Scientist: Zen ve von't have the oxygen to breathe!
        Chorus: (inhales) R-E-C-Y-C-L-E recycle...
        Compost Heap: Recycle!
        Chorus: C-O-N-S-E-R-V-E conserve...
        Compost Heap: Conserve!
        Chorus: Don't you P-O-L-L-U-T-E
pollute the river, sky, or sea,
Compost Heap: Or else we're gonna get...
        Chorus: What we deserrrrrve!

      • City Hall Song
You can't fight city hall,You can't fight corporate america, they are big and we are small, You can't fight city hall

      • Security Guard: And do ya have an appointment?
Rocko: Uh, this was, sort of, a...spur-of-the-moment, spontaneous thing.
Security Guard: Uh-huh, and how d'ya all know the words?
        (pause)
Heffer: Hoh, boy...He's gotcha there, Rock.
Rocko: I don't know the words!
Crowd: (singing) He doesn't know the words...
        Rocko: SHUT UP!!!

    • NOTES (3)

      • With the exception of the announcer in Rocko's mind saying, "Buy this! Food-O-Matic 2000!", Fatal Contraption has no spoken dialogue in it whatsoever.

      • The "Zanzibar!" episode won the 1996 Environmental Media Award (USA) in the Animated Children's category.

      • Two songs from "Zanzibar!" can be heard on the album The Best of Nicktoons. "Spring Cleaning" and "The Spelling Song (R-E-C-Y-C-L-E Recycle!)."

    • ALLUSIONS (2)

      • Heffer: Look, everyone! It's Murky the Bear!

Murky is a play on Smokey the bear-- the longest running US public service icon advocating public awareness of wildfires and that they can be prevented by ordinary people. Even what was assumed to be Murky's quote of "Only you can clean up the planet." was taken from Smokey's catchphrase "Only you can prevent forest fires" which was later updated to "Only you can prevent wildfires."

      • Episode Title: Fatal Contraption

The title is an obvious parody of Adrian Lyne's 1987 film Fatal Attraction.
