On the eve a group camping trip Andy and Gail chase down a teenage driver who blows through a sobriety check point and discover a young girl living as a boy locked in the trunk. While they unravel the tangled mess of protecting Alex, Swarek deals with a former gangbanger whose nephew was gunned down, and Epstein tries (awkwardly) to offer support to Cruz who returns to duty for the first time following the shooting.
The main story takes several complicated issues and deals with them responsibly and Andy is well-chosen as Alex's protector, but although the tension remains high throughout the message overshadows the story at times. Given the bulk of the episode is spent on this story none of the others are really given much time to develop, and I would have really liked to have seen more of the Epstein/Cruz interaction. Chloe returns, working with Nick for the first time where she begins to suspect his feelings for Andy go far more than simple friendship (a revelation she shares with Gail when the pair get into a fight as the episode comes to a close).
