  • Alien subplot not withstanding...

    9.5
I would have given this episode a perfect score, but because of the bit where Arnie gets abducted by aliens, I had to take away 5 points. (Of all the ways they could have gotten rid of Arnie, they couldn't just have him killed off by loan sharks, or get hit by a drunk driver. Alien abduction may work for the X-files, but not this show!)

Anyway, I felt this episode is both depressing and believable, yet it's one many people can relate too. Dan's bike shop goes under, then Rosanne loses her job, so now money is going to be very tight. Then Becky gets upset because she can't afford to go to the college of her choice. (Why didn't she look into academic financial aide, the way Darlene did when she went to school in Chicago?)

I agree that the highlight was DJ's spelling Bee. His word, foreclosure. As soon as DJ was given that word, Dan and Rosanne sat back with that look as if to say, "It's in the bag!"

On a side note, I always assumed DJ stood for Dan Junior. But it was revealed in this episode that it's short for David Jacob.moreless
  • Funny!

    10
This Episode was a great one. I think that the fact that the Bike Shop went belly up wasn't so cool because it was a lot of fun with that shop and it just made the show a bit more fun. The winning of the spelling bee was a great pick me up for such a depressing moment in the Conners life and the Ice Cream fight was great as well. The fact that Arnie got abducted was stupid because he was really funny, that and why not beg to take Nancie along with him. I give this episode a B+.moreless

    • Darlene: (referring to D.J.'s spelling bee) This couldn't be more boring if it was ladies golf.

    • Nancy (about Arnie): He couldn't even face me. Instead he leaves me some stupid note about space creatures sent to take back intelligent life.
Roseanne: Man, are their bosses gonna be ticked.

    • Darlene: You know, Mom, the lunch lady at school's been out sick for a couple of weeks. I think she's probably going to die soon. Are you interested?
Roseanne: Gee, I don't know. Serving crappy food to ungrateful teenagers? How would I know I was at work?

    • Mike Summers: I'm going door to door to get to know my constituents.
Roseanne: Door to door, huh? That takes a lot of time. Why don't you just go down to the unemployment office and see everybody at once?

    • Darlene: Mom, did you tell DJ to wash his hair?
      Roseanne: Yeah.
Darlene: Well, you should've told him to take his blazer off first.
Roseanne: Why does he DO that?

    • Nancy: Dan, did he tell you anything? Is there another woman?
Dan: No offense, Nancy...But we were surprised that there was a first woman.

    • Dan: Remember our family motto: We're Conner's, we've got to eat!

    • Dan: How was the last day on the job?
Roseanne: Horrible! Leon can't find me no other job, and I didn't have any customers to take it out on.

    • (Leon is toasting the closing of Rodbell's)

Leon: Well, here's to the last day. We're not out in the parking lot, watching the place burn, but this is nice.

    • Roseanne: DJ, I always knew you had some special hidden talent! You can Spell!, You can spell!
Darlene: And that's where the BIG money is.
      DJ: You're just jealous.
Darlene: Yeah, that's it. I wanted to be Rain Man.

    • (During a spelling bee)
      Teacher: David Jacob, spell "Monarch."
Dan: (from the audience) Good, an easy one.
      D.J.: M-O-N-A-R-C-H
      Dan: Oooh, Tough luck, Deej.
      Teacher: That is correct.

    • Leon: Welcome to Rodbell's Lunchonette...
Bonnie: Where the food speakes for itself...
      Roseanne: All night long!

    • Roseanne: How's Nancy?
      Jackie: She's a wreck. She's crying, she's sobbing . . .
Roseanne: Why, did Arnie come back?

    • Dan:( reading Arnie's note) Who are the Allens and why are they out of spice?
Roseanne: It's aliens Dan, from Outer Space!
