Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • Great for a first Halloween episode

I liked this episode a lot. I thought it had all the right points for getting into the spirit of Halloween. Season 2 so far is great, I can't wait to watch more. :) I loved the interaction between Becky and Roseanne and how Roseanne was trying to cheer Becky up because she couldn't go to a party. In the end Becky ended up having fun. :) And of course the competetion with Dan and Roseanne was priceless, especially the ending.

No one wants her parents at their house! :)moreless
  • This first Halloween episode was the reason why I bought the second season on DVD, but I quickly fell in love with all of season two. Out of all the seasons, this one remains my favorite, I watch it over and over and over again...!moreless

This first Halloween episode was the reason why I bought the second season on DVD, but I quickly fell in love with all of season two. Out of all the seasons, this one remains my favorite, I watch it over and over and over again...!

I love all the pranks, the decorations, and of course the costumes. No wonder the Connors are broke, they spent so much on Halloween! This episode was so beautifully done. You could not even tell it was their first Halloween episode. And I laughed so hard at the end credits when Roseanne tricked Dan into believing that her parents were coming for a three week visit. Ha ha! This is a classic episode! A++moreless
  • A great Halloween episode with lots of very funny jokes.

This is one of my favorites of the Halloween episodes, the costumes are fantastic, and there is never a dull moment, the jokes are all great in this one. It also has one of my favorite quotes from the entire series:

Dan: I'm sorry, did you say 'champ'?

Roseanne: That's right, I am the fair maiden of fright.

    Dan: Get back Loretta!

I loved the costumes in this one, especially Jackie as the disembodied head on the table. This is a really fun episode with hilarious jokes the entire time. I find myself always watching this episode when it's on TV despite how many times I've seen it.moreless
  • It's Halloween in Lanford, and while setting up a haunted house for the neighborhood kids, Dan and Roseanne compete with each other for the title of Master of Halloween Fright. An absolute howl.moreless

Until the DVD of Season Two appeared, I had this episode stored on my DVR so I could watch it whenever there was nothing on live TV, or I needed a break, or was avoiding doing real things like paying bills. I never get tired of this episode. This was the Golden Age of "Roseanne" episodes, when the writing was fresh and edgy and spot-on and Roseanne hadn't begun her transformation from normal-looking woman to whatever it is she became. Everything clicked: Dan's and Roseanne's oneupsmanship in the Halloween prank department, Jackie's make-up job on the kids, the make-up in general, and the costumes. It was lighthearted, silly fun. I wondered why the writers bothered to insert Crystal and Lonnie into this episode, as they were peripheral at best and contributed nothing, but that's just a small quibble. In the end, as we all knew it would turn out, Roseanne was The Champ, The Master of Halloween Fright. I did like Dan as Freddy Krueger, though.moreless
  • This is another well written episode where the conner's get ready for halloween and there yearly pranks.

What a great episode where Roseanne and Dan have it out to see who can scare the other one half to death. Near the beginning Dan has Roseanne by pretending he cuts himself on a wood cutter or something like that and comes in bleeding like crazy. Roseanne comes to his rescue with some clean tea towels and bandage's and he squirts fake blood out of a turkey baster like thing. Later Roseanne thinks of the one thing that scares Dan the most. Trust me if I was in his place and had that happend to me I think I would have a heart attack :)moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • The Conner family creates an extravagant haunted house for trick-or-treaters in this episode. All family members help run the haunted house including Jackie, Crystal, and Crystal's son, Lonny.

    • Early in the episode, we see Roseanne and Jackie ask Becky and Darlene what they're going as for Halloween. Both Becky and Darlene make fun of the idea of dressing up for Halloween due to their age, Becky saying she's going as Wonderwoman and Darlene says she's going as Casper, the friendly ghost. Additionally, Darlene even goes so far to say, "if I want candy, I'll go through your purse (Roseanne's)." But, later in the episode we see Darlene dressed up for Halloween.

    • As Roseanne is pretending to be electrocuted by the toaster to trick Dan, she accidentally knocks a plate off the counter. It breaks into pieces on the floor. They continue with the scene.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Roseanne: ...Becky's fourteen so all she cares about is boys and herself.
Jackie: Yea, she'll grow out of that.
Roseanne: Why? I never did, ha!

    • Jackie: I got you something. From the haunted mansion.
Dan: Moans, screams and rattling chains.
Roseanne: Oh, I get it you taped your date last night.

    • Becky: Why don't you not tell me? (about Halloween)
Roseanne: Okay I won't, Halloween is the one night of the year when the veil is lifted between the living and the realm of the dead, and the dead walk the earth and we have to dress up in scary costumes so they don't recognize us.
Becky: Why do the dead people come back?
Roseanne: For the candy! There's no chocolate in Hell. That's why it's Hell. Now do you want to dress up, or do you want to go to Hell?

    • Becky: Dad, do you remember some psycho Mrs. Osmand?
Dan: Yeah, didn't she have a couple of hits in the 70s?
Roseanne: No Dan, you know, the one they took away?
Dan: Oh yeah, she was scary. Wasn't she the one that always tried to bite her face?
Roseanne: Well that was when there was still hope...And you know what happened afterwards when they locked her up?
      Dan: Yeah, she uh..she...
      Darlene: Escaped.
      Dan: Yeah.
Becky: No she didn't, you said they let her out!
Roseanne: Well, we didn't want to scare you.
Jackie: Yeah, you know, there's an APB on her.
      Dan: Is that so?
Roseanne: Dan, there's a woman out in our backyard!
Dan: She just went behind the garage, I better go out there and have a look.
      Roseanne: No Dan! No!
      Becky: I don't see anything!
      Darlene: Where'd she go!?
      Dan, Roseanne, and Jackie: Gotcha!
Darlene: She ate her face, yeah right!

    • Jackie: Roseanne, remember Misses Osmand?
Roseanne: Oh yeah, she was scary.
      Becky: Who was she?
Jackie: Oh she was this mad woman, over on Elm Ridge who looked like a vampire. She had this long black haggy hair and some cape thing and she used to jump out from her front porch and scare us half to death.
Roseanne: Too bad she never did it on Halloween.
Jackie: Hey Sis, didn't she wind up in the jail for the criminally insane?
Roseanne: Yea and I think that, uh, I read somewhere that she just got released.
Jackie: Yea. Yea, I think I read that too.
Darlene: Well, you think she'll come back to Lanford?
Roseanne: If she's truly insane she will.
Becky: Darlene they're just goofing on you.
Roseanne[Blinking]: Yea! We're just goofing on you.
