Dear Mom and Dad
AIRED:
An unannounced visit by Roseanne's parents has the Conner house in an uproar. Dan and Jackie are pushing a usually outspoken Roseanne to stick up for herself, because she is now at a loss for words. Hostility and stir-craziness abound, but the biggest shock comes when Bev announces that they are moving to Lanford.moreless

  • What the show was really about.

    9.4
At this point in the first season the show had reached perfection: a blue-collar comedy based on reality, not hampered by cheap sentiment. The basic premise is one many people will recognise: adults still reacting like children when faced with their parents. Roseanne and Jackie have built lives for themselves and fear that their parents moving to the area will set them back again. There is no talk of child abuse or anything dramatic in their past, it's not a movie of the week. The parents are not (yet) terribly bad, they're just quite annoying. Later in the series the relationship between Roseanne and her parents was given some new hurdles, making it all less recognisable to the average viewer.

Added to this bit of realism was a huge collection of jokes and one-liners. (Just look at the quotes section on this site.) Unlike in some recent sitcoms, the one-liners were not predictable. Even throwaway lines like 'You have total recall for all things imaginary' show a quality of humor that is rare nowadays.

Funny and real. Where did those shows go?moreless

    • (Roseanne and Jackie's mother walks into the kitchen from the living room as Roseanne and Dan are putting together a grocery list)
Beverly: Is there a place in here to sit down?
Roseanne: Yeah, why don't you try one of these things we call chairs. We use them frequently.

    • (the Conner family is playing poker and the doorbell rings)
Roseanne: Geez, it's the fuzz! Hide the cards and the chips!

    • Darlene: You guys think we don't get your corny, little sex jokes.
Roseanne: Hey, you kids are our corny, little sex jokes.

    • Al: I'm very particular about where I sleep.
      Dan: What does that mean?
Al: I'll tell you something about me. I'll never sleep in a communist country. I'll visit one during the day, but I'll never sleep in one during the night.

    • Dan: (sitting at the kitchen table, formulating a grocery list, while Roseanne looks in the refrigerator) Let me get this straight... We need milk?
      Roseanne: Milk.
      Dan: Eggs?
      Roseanne: Eggs.
Dan: (sarcastically, as Roseanne's parents have unexpectedly come to stay) Bullets?

    • Roseanne: What are you doing up?
Darlene: Grandpa's in the bathroom making those gagging noises.
      Roseanne: Eeeeewwww.
Darlene: He's been at it for at least half an hour.
Roseanne: Well he should have all of it up by now.

    • Roseanne: Why didn't you call?
Bev: I tried but the line was busy, so then I called Jackie but I couldn't get her, and I thought something terrible had happened, but even if it did, she wouldn't tell me.
Jackie: My apartment was being fumigated.
Al: Fumigated for what? The louses you go out with?

    • Dan: I don't know how we're supposed to get any sleep on these cots.
Roseanne: Well I better get used to sleeping on a cot. I'm gonna be sleeping on a cot for the rest of my life cuz I'm gonna be in prison for murdering my parents!

    • Bev: Roseanne, Dan shouldn't sleep on his left side. It's bad for the heart.
Dan: (to himself) So is a rusty spike.

    • Bev: Your father's diet is low salt, low fat, and high fiber.
Roseanne: Why don't we just get him some wood?

    • Bev: Where do you keep your citrus fruit?
      Roseanne: What?!?
Bev: Your dad has to have a piece of citrus fruit with breakfast!
Roseanne: I think there's an orange under the dryer.

  • NOTES (2)

    • This is the first time we see Roseanne and Jackie's mother and father on screen together. Estelle Parsons will make more guest appearances in future episodes. This is the first of two appearances that John Randolph makes as Roseanne and Jackie's dad. The second and final appearance is in the first Thanksgiving episode of the show which is in season 2.

    • Actor Bruce Willis has a walk-on in this episode's tag.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • (Dan says to Roseanne) "Why don't you tell Ma and Pa Kettle to shut up".  Dan was talking about Ma and Pa Kettle, a hillbilly couple (played by Margorie Main and Percy Kilbride) who has 15 children and has a farm.  The couple appeared in nine films in the 1940s and 1950s.
