  • Nancy asks Roseanne to accompany her to gay bar with Nancys new girlfriend(Mariel Hemingway). The girl friend ends up kissing Roseanne and Roseanne feels guilty about it

This is the episode I feel defines the direction the show was taking, which I feel is why this is where it jumped the shark.First,we have the issue of homosexuality, which from this point on,becomes more and more of a presence in the series. Then it is done in a manner that is more wierd than serious. Finally,we have the guest star syndrome.Mariel Hemingway was a big enough star that it was a big deal when she appeared on the show.I acually liked Sandra Bernhard on here,at least she never took herself too seriously. Not long afterwards, though, she waa gone, which is another loss that hurt the show seriously.Natalie West was a major loss, and believe it or,I actually liked Tom Arnold as Arnie, but I think his loss goes beyond the show itself.Without his presence,Roseanne completely took over and pretty much destroyed the shows original concept.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • This episode features the return of Dean, who went out with Becky in Episode 4.17. However, at the end of that episode, Dean was supposedly killed by Roseanne after mouthing off to her during the credits.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • (After the night out at the gay bar)
Roseanne: (to Nancy) I'm still pretty cool ya know for a 41-year-old mother of 3 who lives in Lanford, Illinois. I like that Snoopy Dog Dog.

    • Jackie: Well, I'm not going to feel comfortable there. What if everybody there thinks I'm gay?
Roseanne: Well then you could just think they're gay right back at them.

    • Nancy: I don't think you'd have such a great time there.
      Jackie: Sound's like fun.
      Nancy: It's a gay bar.
      Jackie: Okey-dokey.
Roseanne: Well, Jackie, it doesn't bother us if it's gay.
Nancy: Well it might, Friday is convert-a-hetero night.

    • Roseanne: I haven't been dancing since... when was Dad's funeral?

    • Sharon: I've been wanting to meet you for a while, but for some reason Nancy was scared to introduce her girlfriend to you guys.
Roseanne: Why, you ain't one of them lesbians, are ya?

    • Nancy: Nothing personal Rosanne, I just haven't introduced Sharon to any of my friends.
Roseanne: Oh, you mean any of your straight friends right? Beacause you've never been able to accept our alternate lifestyle. Well, it isn't a choice you know!

    • Becky (to Darlene): Well, I don't think she should be taking rides from my ex-boyfriend.
Mark: What, you're not done riding him yet?
Darlene: Wait a minute, did he just say something clever?

  • NOTES (3)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Roseanne says to Leon "If it isn't Charlie Brown". Roseanne was talking about one of the Peanuts character Charlie Brown who has a sister named Sally and a dog named Snoopy, and his catch-phrase is Good Grief.

    • The title is an allusion to the common name of the Clinton-era compromse to allow non-overt homosexuals to serve in the United States armed forces.
