Darlene Conner Healy
David Jacob "D.J." Conner
Rebecca "Becky" Conner Healy
In a chat with sister Darlene, Becky refers to their mother as "the big R." Other later casual references to Roseanne include "Big Red" (Darlene, in Sweet Dreams), "Rosilla" (Darlene, in Tooth or Consequences), "Ro" (Florence, in Suck Up or Shut Up), and "Elsie" (Darlene in Husbands and Wives).
Dan: Chili is science.
Dan: Well, it's chemistry son. See chili represents your three states of matter: solid, liquid, and eventually gas.
(after getting their hair done at the Beauty Box)
Becky: Dad's gonna go crazy when he sees you.
Roseanne: (primping her hair) Are you kidding? Look at me. I can do way better than him.
(in reference to the robe that Dan got Roseanne for Mother's Day)
Jackie: Oh boy, that feels fire retardant.
Roseanne: It's way retardant.
DJ: Here. Happy Mothers Day.
Roseanne: Oh look! It's an ashtray with your picture at the bottom.
Darlene: Oh it's a shame you quit smoking. You could grind your butts out on his face.
(DJ is sitting on the counter kicking the cabinet)
Becky: DJ be quiet! You're gonna wake up mom.
DJ: I don't care!
Darlene: It's Mothers Day you moron. Stop trying to tick her off.
Becky: Yea, go upstairs, hose off whatever stupid thing you made for her at school, and bring it down.
DJ: Or what!?
Darlene: Or we'll bury you under the porch with the rest of our brothers.
DJ: I hate you!
Roseanne: Then my work here is done.
Roseanne: (referring to DJ) I had to go to school to see his teacher because it seems like he hasn't turned in any of his math homework for the past two weeks.
Dan: I see, how did he explain this?
Roseanne: Well, he's had a lot of extra responsibility around here since you died.
Dan: Did I suffer?
Roseanne: No. Sniper, clean shot.
Becky: (talking about a concert) As long as we all understand that you and Stacy won't be sitting with me and my friends.
Darlene: Becky, there's gonna be 20,000 people there. Why would we sit next to the only four geeks?
(discussing what to get Bev for Mothers Day)
Jackie: How bout a crystal vase?
Roseanne: Can't afford that...hey! What about we break a glass and put it in a box marked fragile.
Sara Gilbert, born January 29, 1975, got writer credit for this episode. She was 17 at the time her work aired.
Dan: (checking out Darlene and Becky's new, over-sized hairdos) My God, it's The Shirelles!
Dan is making an allusion to the Shirelles, a late Fifties and early Sixties girl singing group who typically wore bouffant hairdos.
As Dan and DJ argue over the importance of learning math, Dan alludes to Gilligan's Island, asking whether DJ wants to be Gilligan or the Professor - the dependent or the independent.
