I was watching E! tonight; their 101 Favorite Stars Way Back When, and a much, much younger John Goodman was featured in a 1981 "Levi" jeans commercial.  It nearly blew me away!  He was probably 150 pounds lighter than he is now!  They followed it with a "Chunky" soup commercial that he was in right around that time-- perhaps foreshadowing what was to come???    E! is in the business of repeating its programs, so, if you're interested, I'm sure you can still catch it.  John Goodman is number 65 on their list.  Watch for it.

Ya know, that does sound familiar, now that you mentioned it.  We'll have to do some investigating

'tis true. From his bio right here on tv.com

"His first TV appearance was in a Burger King commercial where he had no lines. With a talent as large as his girth, John Goodman proved himself both a distinguished character actor and engaging leading man."

I remember seeing it on some show in the mid-90's about tv actors and "Guess who this is" type of game.

    Sparkle,

To jog your memory, I think you got them confused.  I am pretty sure that was Bruce Willis who did that Levi commercial!  Yeah I know, they do look alike.

Are you just spoofing me cuz Dan looked so svelte? I'm positive it was him. It was on last night and they even said his name, again and again. You're just pulling my leg, aren't you?

    Sparkle,

Here is a site that says John did voiceovers for Haggar: http://www.gladwell.com/1997/1997_07_27_a_khaki.htm

There is also mention of a John Goodman as president of Dockers.

Here is a link that tells about the Bruce Willis commercial for Levi 501s: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000246/otherworks

The "Levi" Jeans commercial John Goodman did was in 1981, and not 1985. He's shown sitting on a steel construction girder welding and talking about "Levis". The Bruce Willis commercial shows a guy (Bruce Willis) spinning around with sunglasses on "ad-ing" for "Levi 501" jeans. They're two different commercials with two different actors. I know I'm not mistaken on this one. My whole family and I watched it together and definitely recognized good, old "Dan" (Like I said, they said his name and everything). Thanks for the "Haggar" link-- I'm gonna check it out, now. President of "Dockers"-- could be!-- remember Dan asking for his "Dockers" when he had a job interview?

I remember seeing John Goodman on a talk show where they showed the Chunky soup clip.  He commented "I had a good 80's", meaning he was well fed for a decade.

I found this picture awhile back where I think he looks really cute. It's the one where he has the mustache....anyone agree?

He was INCREDIBLY cute! Just a young teddy bear, back then. And, those baby pics-- sweet! What an enjoyable biography, too. Thanks SO much for sharing! I wonder what a fried pickle tastes like???

Do you have Captain D's fastfood restaurants near you?  They have fried pickles.  I had them once.  Only once!

I don't have a Captain D's near me, but I think I may HAVE to try one. Just out of curiosity! did you like it the time you tried it? Or was once enough?

Once was more than enough for me!  Some people like them though.  I was on vacation once down South, and saw a lot of roadside stands selling "boiled peanuts".  I had to try them.  The guy told me "you will either love them or hate them".  That was the only time I had them too.
