  • Darlene is embarrassed when Roseanne gives her Home Economics class a lesson in real life family budgeting; D.J. has to deal with a bully.

This episode has a nice, little, uncomplicated plot that is lighthearted and fun to watch. Roseanne invites herself to Darlene's junior high career day and winds up taking her Home Economics class on a field trip to Buy 'n Bag, the local grocery store.

Roseanne's dialogue with the students is good-humored and wise-crackingly playful. And, she manages to embarrass Darlene (in a kinder, more teasing way than usual) whenever she gets the chance. There's even a hint of Roseanne's familiar, old nasal twang, reminiscent of her stand-up comedy days.

The story is centered around Roseanne's number one lesson on how to feed a family of five on a budget: the secret ingredient in her meatloaf recipe. This hardly sounds like the kind of material that would make for a good episode. Leave it to talented "Roseanne" writer, Mark Lloyd Rappaport, to pull it off.

Meanwhile, D.J. deals with a bully. The take charge attitude is cute on him!

My favorite part of this episode comes in the form of a Classic Jackie Moment: when Dan decides to teach D.J. how to fight bullies, Jackie sets out to prove to Dan that size isn't the issue; back when she was on the (police) force, she could take out anybody. She jumps Dan and clings to him like a little spider monkey! Dan is unaffected and just goes on about his business, literally wearing Jackie!!! What a riot! Laurie Metcalf (Jackie) should be crowned the Queen of Physical Comedy! I highly recomend this episode. It is comfortable and fun to watch!moreless

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • During the Buy 'n Bag field trip, Merrill, one of the Home Economics students, selects a brand name cereal. Roseanne opposes. She tells the class she only buys generic, but Merrill puts the brand name cereal into the cart anyway, instead of putting it back on the shelf. Later, in the grocery store check-out line, the generic cereal appears on the conveyor belt; the brand name cereal is no longer in the cart.

    • Roseanne and the Home Economics students wait in the check-out line at the Buy 'n Bag. When the customer in front of them pays for his items, the cashier drops the money on the counter, instead of putting it in the cash register.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Merrill: I don't see why I have to spend my time cooking this food for this family. (class agrees)
Roseanne: You're starting to sound like a housewife, I'm so proud.

    • Roseanne: (about the guy checking out in front of them) Let's see what he's buying: vodka, Malomars and a TV Guide, my guess is single and he's staying that way.

    • Becky: Oh God, not meatloaf again!
      Roseanne: It's ready!

    • Suzy: How long do we cook it?
Roseanne: Till the oldest kid comes down and whines, "Oh God, not meatloaf again!"

    • Dan: (To the father of a kid who was picking on DJ) Whoa, settle down or I'll give my wife a donut to kick your butt.

    • Jackie: Roseanne, can I alk-tay with ou-yay in ivate-pray?
      Roseanne: Ok-ay dok-ay
Dan (making a face): Duuuh... I don't understand what they're talking about, do you?

    • DJ: I made him give me two twinkies; I give one twinkie to my bodyguard and I eat the other one, so it doesn't cost you anything.
Roseanne: You really are a genius!

    • Roseanne: That's brand name, Meryl, bon appetite. We buy generic, only second best for my family. Darlene: No, I eat the brand name cereal.
Roseanne: No, actually it's the brand name box, I've just been buying the generic cereal and refilling the box since 1985.
Darlene: You mean I've been eating generic Frankenberries?
Roseanne: I'm sorry you had to find out this way.

  • NOTES (0)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Roseanne: It's the famous "Twinkie Defense."

This is a reference to the urban legend that Dan White had impaired judgment due to his consumption of Twinkies and other refined sugars.

    • (Kid and Roseanne)
      Kid: What about a vegetable?
      Roseanne: Right here- ketchup!

This is a reference to the 80s when Ronald Reagan declared ketchup a vegetable.
