  • Darlene is embarrassed when Roseanne gives her Home Economics class a lesson in real life family budgeting; D.J. has to deal with a bully.

This episode has a nice, little, uncomplicated plot that is lighthearted and fun to watch. Roseanne invites herself to Darlene's junior high career day and winds up taking her Home Economics class on a field trip to Buy 'n Bag, the local grocery store.

Roseanne's dialogue with the students is good-humored and wise-crackingly playful. And, she manages to embarrass Darlene (in a kinder, more teasing way than usual) whenever she gets the chance. There's even a hint of Roseanne's familiar, old nasal twang, reminiscent of her stand-up comedy days.

The story is centered around Roseanne's number one lesson on how to feed a family of five on a budget: the secret ingredient in her meatloaf recipe. This hardly sounds like the kind of material that would make for a good episode. Leave it to talented "Roseanne" writer, Mark Lloyd Rappaport, to pull it off.

Meanwhile, D.J. deals with a bully. The take charge attitude is cute on him!

My favorite part of this episode comes in the form of a Classic Jackie Moment: when Dan decides to teach D.J. how to fight bullies, Jackie sets out to prove to Dan that size isn't the issue; back when she was on the (police) force, she could take out anybody. She jumps Dan and clings to him like a little spider monkey! Dan is unaffected and just goes on about his business, literally wearing Jackie!!! What a riot! Laurie Metcalf (Jackie) should be crowned the Queen of Physical Comedy! I highly recomend this episode. It is comfortable and fun to watch!
