Nana Mary talks to Beverly on the phone and tortures her by suggesting that her husband might be having an affair. In the later episode "Thanksgiving '91," we learn that he really is.
In syndication, the editing in this episode had lots of noticable quirks. For example, the sound is a bit off in the episode's intro, as well as several other places in the episode. Right before the title sequence shows, for example, the sound cuts out very suddenly.
Darlene: Becky, how can Nana cheat at cutting cards?
Jackie: It's her deck, Einstein.
Nana Mary: Just for that, you're out of the will!
Nana Mary: I have to go right now.
Jackie: "Sex Talk Radio" is on in ten minutes.
Nana Mary: If I don't call, they worry.
Bonnie: We're out of coffee, I'll make some more.
Roseanne: Forget about it, this ain't work. If people want more coffee, they can make it themselves.
Bonnie: That's exactly what she says at the restaurant.
Crystal: I read that you should talk to the baby in the womb so he can get used to your voice, and he can even understand a little.
Roseanne (leaning toward Crystal's belly): Hey baby, back off the buffet!
Crystal: Can I bring anything out to the table? Chips or dip or something?
Roseanne: I don't want you to bring anything out to the table, Crystal.
Crystal: Now, Roseanne, just because I'm pregnant doesn't mean I can't pitch in.
Roseanne: Crystal, it's because you eat everything before you get it out there!
(Nana Mary is on the phone with a radio call-in show)
Roseanne: What's the topic?
Nana Mary: Meat. This Ted from Toledo thinks it's mean to kill cows.
Roseanne: What does he want us to do, eat 'em alive?
Nana Mary: That's very good, I'm gonna use that.
Becky: What's all the fuss about Mother's Day? I don't remember us getting like a Kid's Day.
Dan: Someday, my precious angel, you too will be a parent, and then you will realize that every day is Kid's Day.
Nana Mary: You're never gonna believe it...Little Darlene has boobies!
Nana Mary: (while making her "secret recipe" for potato salad, yells from kitchen to Rosanne who is outside) Where's your Tabasco sauce?
Roseanne: (yells back) It's in the fridge door! (turns back to guests) Isn't she great? She puts Tabasco sauce in her potato salad!
Nana Mary: (yells back) No way! I'm making a Bloody Mary!
In this episode, Shelley Winters joins the cast as Roseanne's grandmother, even though she is only seven years older than Estelle Parsons, who portrays Roseanne's mother.
This episode was filmed before the previous episode "Dances with Darlene". This is very obvious if you look at Lecy Goranson's hair, it was short in the last episode while being long in this one.
In "Scenes from a Barbecue", the song they sing during the closing credits, "Going to the Free Show" was an inside joke. The cast used to sing it backstage pretending to be people in the studio audience. John Goodman talked about it on a "Larry King Live" appearance.
Nana Mary was named after Roseanne's real life grandmother Mary.
The title of this episode is an allusion to Ingmar Bergman's film, Scenes from a Marriage, starring Liv Ullmann.
