Episode Summary

The Back Story
After Roseanne throws her back out, Bev arrives to help out -- and to spoil her grandchildren.

Who was the Episode MVP ?

No results found.
  • Roseanne injures her back. The Doctor recommends breast reduction surgery.

A well-written comedy with plenty of laugh lines. There are references both to the self-cleaning house of The Jetsons and the Fonz of Happy Days. Bev comes to town, and trumps Dan's paarenting efforts twice.

Several character stereotypes were reinforced: the self-absorbed side of Becky as she bargains for a car, as well as her behind-the-times side as shown when meeting Mark; the interfering side of grandmother Bev referenced above; the separation side of DJ, who blows out the birthday cake candles mid-song and disappears; and the stubborn side of Dan.

On the more serious side, this episode set up a comedy/didactic episode on breast reduction surgery.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • When Dan plays the Super Mario game (which obviously is Super Mario World), you can hear sound effects that aren't in the game (explosions for instance), also Mark mentions things not in the game ("the skeleton stabbed you in the heart"). The music from the game that Dan is playing at the shop is in the Super Mario World introduction, when you turn the game on.

  • QUOTES (13)

    • Roseanne: Ow it hurts! It hurts! It hurts!
Dan: Did you do this while you were cleaning house?
Roseanne: No, I didn't get that far!
Dan: You didn't try to shovel the walk did you?
Roseanne: (pause) Well darn, you caught me.

    • Bev: He's at that age where the whole world revolves around him.
Roseanne: Yes. My little boy's becoming a man.

    • D.J.: (referring to Dean Dean the son 'n law machine) Isn't he coming back?...But I liked him. He didn't call me jerkweed.
Darlene: Well he didn't know you D.J.

    • Roseanne: I was screaming so loud DJ could hear me from next door... after about an hour, he came home to see what was wrong.

    • Dan: (talking about the Super Nintendo game he and Roseanne are going to give DJ for his birthday) Once he gets this, we'll never see him again.
Becky: Let's give it to him now.

    • Roseanne: Gee Becky, you've been griping to drive that car ever since you got your damn license. Now it's yours.
Becky: Yeah well, it's not fair, you get Grandma's car, and I get your old bomber.
Roseanne: Well what can I say? My mommy is better than your mommy!

    • DJ: Can you get out of bed yet?
      Roseanne: No honey, I'm sorry I can't.
      DJ: What about my cake?
Bev: I'll make you one DJ.
DJ: I want one from the store, like Mom makes.

    • Bev: You were such a horrible patient. I had to hide your medicine in your food.
      (Roseanne stops eating)
      Roseanne: What kind of medicine?
Bev: Oh whatever I had that would make you drowsy.

    • Dan: (on the phone with Roseanne) Are you ok?
(Roseanne begins to scream into the phone)
Dan: (to Becky) She's breathing ok.

    • (DJ is telling Roseanne he wants a Super Nintendo for his birthday)
DJ: All my friends have them, and they make fun of me 'cause I don't.
Darlene: That's not why they make fun of you, DJ.

    • Bev: (meeting Mark for the first time) I can see what she (Becky) sees in you. You look just like that Fonz character who is so popular nowadays.

    • Roseanne: (watching Dan shoveling snow) I wish he'd get someone else to do it. One of these days he'll keel over, and I'll never get my car out of the driveway.

    • Becky: All I've got to do is count to ten.
Darlene: Don't wear mittens. It'll slow you down. (Roseanne laughs from the bedroom)
      Becky: Mother!
Roseanne: (from the bedroom) Well, it was funny!

  • NOTES (0)

    • Bev: (meeting Mark for the first time) Well, I understand what Becky sees in you-- you look like that Fonzie fellow whose so popular these days.
Mark: Thanks. Well, nice meeting you. See you tomorrow, Mr. Conner.
Dan: (pretending to slick his hair back, then giving a two thumbs up sign) Ayyy!

Bev is making an allusion to Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, the hoodish, motorcycle-riding character from the successful 1970's comedy series, Happy Days. Dan is responding to Mark in a typical Fonzie fashion.

    • Roseanne: (keeling over on the couch in pain as her back just went out) I can't get up and I don't have one of those things!...Ohh! I shouldn't have laughed at that old lady on TV!

Roseanne is making an allusion to the "Life Alert Pendant", a protection system whereby an elderly person can summon help by pressing a button on a pendant. The "Life Alert" commercial shows an older woman in need, lying on the floor, calling out their catch phrase, "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!"

    • Roseanne: (complaining to Dan about having to clean the house on her day off) It's not like you went out and bought me one of those self-cleaning, electric Jetson houses.

Roseanne is making an allusion to the 1960's television cartoon program, The Jetsons, about the misadventures of a futuristic family living in a house where, at the push of a button, machines would do all the work.
