In this episode, the granny square afghan, typically displayed on Roseanne's sofa, has been replaced with another of a slightly different pattern with a subtle color variation. In the episode to follow, the original afghan has returned.
White Parent/Dawn: (at DJ's school, after the Thanksgiving pageant) American history comes down to a couple words: people came here for the freedom.
Black Parent: (defiantly) EXCUSE ME?!?
Dawn: (after DJ's Thanksgiving pageant) God, Roseanne, could you believe how horrible that play was?
Roseanne: What are you talking about? I'd give it two thumbs up, and a couple other fingers, too!
DJ: (being hugged by Roseanne after his school play performance) Hey, Mom, people are watching!
Darlene: Ah, been there, Deej. Safest thing to do is just go limp.
Dan: (sitting next to Darlene who is clipping her fingernails) Darlene, you just missed my eye!
Darlene: Yeah, I know. I'm a little off today.
DJ: (crying to Roseanne and Dan about his school play) Come on. I mean, this is really important to me. We've been practicing for months. I mean, it would mean so much to me if you didn't come.
Early Native American Mr. Hill: (motioning to the Pilgrim women) Why don't you sit at the table with the men?
Pilgrim Dan: Nix, nix. We are trying to keep their weight down for the swimsuit portion of the Miss Pilgrim competition.
Pilgrim Dan is making an allusion to the Miss America Pageant, a competition which awards scholarships to young women from the fifty states plus two territories in the United States of America. Contestants for Miss America are selected by a panel of judges based on a set of five competitions, one of them being "Lifestyles and Fitness Swimsuit". In this portion of the competition, contestants walk on stage in swimsuits and high heeled shoes.
Native American Woman: (hearing a demanding Pilgrim Dan in the background calling for Pilgrim Roseanne) Who was that?
Pilgrim Roseanne: That's my husband, Newton Gingrich Conner!
Roseanne is making an allusion to Newton "Newt' Gingrich who served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in the 1990's. He played a major role in leading the Republican Revolution in the House, ending 40 years of Democratic Parties majorities in the House.
Early Native American Mr. Hill: (inviting the Pilgrims to eat) Here, come and enjoy our bounty.
Pilgrim Roseanne: Bounty, "The Quicker Picker-upper".
Pilgrim Roseanne is making an allusion to "Bounty", a brand of paper towel from Procter and Gamble whose longtime slogan was "The Quicker Picker-upper".
Roseanne: (talking about DJ's Thanksgiving pageant) I have to tell you, I thought it was pretty cool, but, I will NEVER laugh at F-Troop again, no matter how funny that Larry Storch is!
Roseanne is making an allusion to F-Troop, the satirical 1960's television sitcom about a fictional Army outpost in the West, the year before the Civil War ended. Actor Larry Storch played the bumbling Corporal Randolph Agarn on the program.
Mr. Hill: (after the school Thanksgiving pageant) Well, did you folks all enjoy the play?
Parent: I thought it was great!
Roseanne: Yeah, it was pretty cool.
Mr. Hill: Well, thanks for your support.
Roseanne: Ya know, but some of the people here are kinda upset because the story doesn't agree with the Thanksgiving story they read on the "Butterball" wrapper.
Roseanne is making an allusion to "Butterball" brand frozen turkey, the top-selling brand of turkey in the United States.
