The Parenting Trap
AIRED:
Dan is set to handle a problem that DJ is having in school, but doesn't know how to go about it. Mark steps up with an insight to the problem to save the day. Roseanne, finding out that the problem is puberty-related, decides to put her own personal "growing up" story into the mix, instead of letting Dan handle it on his own as promised. DJ runs from the room terrorized, and Roseanne was left with breaking her deal with Dan to let him deal with DJ without meddling.moreless

I enjoyed this episode. There was not too many truly hilarious scenes, but they were all enjoyable.

The main plot of the episode is about DJ having trouble in school. His teacher calls Roseanne and Dan in, and tells them that DJ never seems to understand the homework, and he never wants to write up answers on the board.

Dan feels left out of parenting because he feels that Roseanne gets to make all the decisions and handle all the problems with their kids, so Roseanne decides to let him handle this problem with DJ.

After some consulting with Mark and Fred, Dan figures out that DJ is just going through puberty and is getting erections at school, and naturally, feels embarrassed. After getting some ideas from Fred and Mark, Dan decides to suggest to DJ that he carry a book in front of him to conceal it.

He tells Roseanne what he suggested to DJ, and she pretends to like it, but she approaches DJ when he's alone, and in an attempt to make him feel less embarrassed about puberty, tells him about her first period. This causes DJ to freak out and run screaming from the room. When Dan asks why he is running and discovers what Roseanne was telling him, Roseanne has to fess up.

The only thing about this episode I felt was a little out of place, although it wasn't really a bad thing, was the short scenes with David and Darlene trying to get over each other. They weren't really bad scenes, but they weren't especially entertaining, and I suppose were more to just move their story along for later episodes. It just felt a bit tacked on in this episode since the main focus was elsewhere.

I like episodes that involve DJ since he's my favorite character on the show, so it was nice to see another episode about him growing up, and of course these season 7 episodes were much better written then most of season 9. Try to catch this one on Nick at Nite, it's worth watching.moreless

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Fred: (Dan, Mark and Fred are discussing their techniques for making their erections less known) Sometimes I would just stick my hands in my pockets.
Mark: That's usually how mine started.

    • (Dan reveals his solution to Roseanne on DJ's "problem")
Dan: I told him to put a book in front of it.

    • (The men are revealing their experiences with puberty)
Dan: All through Jr. High I dreamed of being a bus driver...

    • Dan: Oh you mean he can now lie on his back in the sun and tell what time it is?
Mark: It's got nothing to do with telling time, the kid's getting erections!

    • Dan: (Dan's solution to DJ's erections was to put a book in front of it) Say it. I handled the situation better than you.
Roseanne: Fine, Dan. You handled it better than me. Happy now?
Dan: If I were any happier, I'd need a book.

    • (DJ is screaming and running up the stairs)
DJ: OH MY GOD, I DON'T WANNA HEAR ANYMORE...
Dan: Whoa, settle down, what's going on?
DJ: Mom was just telling me a story and I don't want to hear anymore!
Dan: Well that's no reason for you to go running out of the room screaming like a maniac!
DJ: It was about her having her period!
      Dan: As you were...
